You are right, you don’t need to buy the special tool. What you need to do is to create a file with the front and one side of the book, and then use the free transform tool to reshape the two sections to show perspective. Finally, a drop shadow will add to the effect.

I don’t have a step by step tutorial for this, but you can probably get there if you play with the tools I have mentioned.
