Hi,
End of my quest report.
All fixes failed but one. Wipe the disk and reload XP from scratch. Works slicker than grease! Remember, save your files to backup.

Microsoft made a HORRIBLE design decision, way back with the very first version of Windoze, when they created a Registry file that was open to every program installed, or UNinstalled, on the computer

Over time, it is very common for the Registry to become so corrupted with bad or incomplete installs or UNinstalls, that no amount of tweaking will fix the problem

The only solution, as RB found, is to wipe the hard drive and install everything fresh

That HORRIBLE (this is, of course, only my opinion) design desision has cause more problems than anything else
