What I’m looking for is a way to have features of the crop tool–resizable selection and variable outline (shield) opacity–BUT to create a selection out of the area to be retained from the crop without actually cropping.

The Marquee tool gives me the desired resize functions and the ability to make a selection (and thus a mask or channel) but doesn’t give me the shield found in the crop tool.

Is there some way to have a Marquee and a Crop shield?

You should re-post in the feature requests department up top.

What do you need it for?

I didn’t want to post this as a feature request until I knew that the functionality doesn’t currently exist.

My interest is to create various crops, each version on a separate layer that has the unwanted/cropped portion of the image ‘masked’ by black fill. In this way I can turn each layer on and off to compare the various cropped looks–without having to create different files, or snapshots that get lost when the file is closed.

Quick mask mode and refine edge (On Black) while using the marquee too are close but they disable the marquee so that I can’t change the marquee in real time, as is possible with the crop tool.

quick mask?

With quick mask, AFAIK, it’s not possible to change the selected area (and thus the shielded area) **in real time** as is possible with the crop tool.

And with a custom shape, inverted to show only the inside? (and lowered opacity?

PECourtejoie, I started a feature request thread at <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b4b852>

Any support, or further suggestions, for this feature should be directed to the new thread.

As it turns out there’s a similar functionality avaialble.
1. Draw a selection with the Marquee Tool.
2. Double click the Quick Mask icon to open the dialog box. Change the color and opacity to the desired settings, i.e. 100%, black.
3. Hit ctrl/cmd+T to enter Transform *while still in Quick Mask mode*.
4. ..etc, (you know the rest).

post 3? 🙂

sorry. terseness hurts. i don’t know why you’d have to go 100% black though, but i guess that’s why it’s a preference. 😉

No worries. 😉

Re. preferences, agreed. 🙂 I just get distracted by lower shield opacities (but think the default Q-mask settings are perfect for masks), but I like the idea of being able to choose white (or, as you point out, whatever color) for those images that will need that color matt.

I’m not sure this is want you want…but

Draw the marquee selection how ever you want.
Invert your selection
create a Layer/New fill layer,(black or any color)
Change opacity to 50%

Do this as many times as you want for different crops.
Turn only one layer visable on at a time to see the crop.

Make a Channel out of the Selection and turn on visibility on it. I think this can be made into an action and tired to an F key if need be.

There is no specific tool to do this, but still, it’s pretty simple to do.

1. Duplicate your layer
2. Make a marquis selection of your crop area making sure feathering is set to zero
3. Invert selection
4. Edit > Fill > Color
5. Edit > Fade to Visually adjust opacity of the color fill

This is the best workaround to doing it right now.

You can also have the colored opacity layer and
leave it movable/editable, but
this would be a little more complex.

1. Duplicate your layer
2. Create a color fill layer above nmbr 1, choosing color and opacity as you create
3. Click on the layer mask section of the color fill layer
4. On the layer mask, make marquis selection of your crop area making
sure feathering is set to zero
5. Invert selection – the image area beneath becomes visible and the ‘crop’ rectangle
remains movable and editable.
6. If you needed multiple crops, each different ‘crop’ could be saved as a history state and each would remain editable and moveable.

the Photoshop interface is obtuse but once you get
the hang of it, it’s very powerful. I quite doubt that they’re going to make this
feature into a tool as it’s not something a lot of people would want to do every
day. if you truly need to do the above a lot, you could automate it using
Actions. Hope all this makes sense to you.
