Does anyone know how to change the default directory for the file browser?

I NEVER use the stupid Windows "my pictures" (etc.) directories, and programs always use those as defaults …..grrr.

Stacy, I think this has been discussed before and as far as I can remember, it can’t be set. I think the "My Picture" folder is always going to be there when you first start Photoshop. However, as long as you have PS open, it will remember the last folder that you were looking at. Or, at least it does on my machine.
Someone else can correct me on this if I am wrong. I think it would be a nice addition to PS though. Maybe with version 8.

Stacy,

Does anyone know how to change the default directory for the file browser?

There was a guy who knew how to do that, but Adobe killed him. So, no, there’s no way at present that anyone in these forums have revealed. It’s an issue that’s been discussed much. No answer.

you can also use tweakui to change the location of the my pictures folder (and it doesn’t have to be called my pictures).
