Profiles don’t show up in Soft Proof list

Last night I dug out an old box of Crane Museo paper to make some prints on my Epson 3800. I downloaded and installed the Museo profile from Crane almost a year ago, and it shows up in the Windows/sys32/spool/drivers/color directory, along with all my other profiles.

But when I tried to soft proof the image in CS3, the Museo profile did not appear in the list in the Soft Proof dialog. On closer look, there were a few other profiles that also failed to appear.

Is there any way to manually add these profiles to the Soft Proof list? I always thought that the Soft Proof drop down list just picked up the entire "…../color" directory? Not sure what’s going on here.

PS The profiles don’t show up in the Photoshop CS3 "Print" drop down list either…

Rick,

Photoshop should indeed pick up the profiles.
But there is second directory where Photoshop looks for profiles. Might be worth trying to put the profiles there…

c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles\

No joy though. There must be something "out of spec" about the profile. In the meantime, I found a Museo profile at Digital Art Supplies that seems to work pretty well.

Did you right-click on the profile in XP’s color folder and choose "Install Profile?" This is necessary before it will be recognized.

Yes Chris. As I said in my original post, the profile is installed into the Windows/System32/Spool/Driver/Color directory. I can see it there in Windows Explorer along with all my other profiles. But Photoshop won’t pick it up in any of its’ profile lists: Soft Proof, Print, etc. I’m putting it down to some sort of fault in the profile.

Rick,

each profile has a file name and an internal
name. PhS uses the internal name.
Please observe whether after the installation
a new profile appears with a so far unknown
name.
You may check the profile by ICC Profile Inspector
(I don’t have the URL at hands in the moment).
You can rename the profile by ProfileMaker Profile
Editor.
