This is the bane of my existence. I want to take a picture with a white background and remove the background so I can paste it in another document with a colored background.

Please help.

Thanks.

In your case, drag the image with the white background onto your other image and set blend mode to Multiply.

That removes ALL of the white; if your subject has white in it and you want that retained, you can’t do it that way.

Exactly how you do it depends on image composition, intent, and your familiarity with photoshop tools. There are a dozen ways, so it’s hard to recommend – you can try the extract filter, magic wand, background eraser, magic eraser, etc.

If you post a sample picture on the web and tell us the link, you will probably get more specific help.

Simple white background – no shadows?

Select the wand tool. Click on the white – inverse the selection, go to Layer>New Layer via Copy.

You should now have your foreground removed from the background. Change the background to whatever color you need.

The more complex the background, the more complex this procedure gets.
