CS3 jpeg file naming bug?

I’m wondering if anyone can tell me how to force PS CS3 to use an underscore and not a hyphen when saving files.

If I save a file as My File.psd, or My File.TIF, everything is fine, but when I then try to save for the web (as jpeg) it forces it to My-File.jpg.

I don’t mind the added character, but how can I tell PS that if it wants to add characters I want to use an underscore and not a hyphen. In other words, My_File.jpg is fine, but My-File.jpg is not.

I have tried to change the hyphen to a an underscore in the output settings dialog (found in the save for web dialog box) but it just doesn’t work. The files come out with a hyphen no matter what the dialog box says. I’ve searched help, reviewed all preferences I can find, but not luck. Surely there must be a way to do this, but I’m not sure where to look.

Thanks for any suggestions

check the save settings in save4web. it’s proably got unix file name support on.

btw, you can’t have a space in a file name you’re going to use on the web. it’ll always be replaced w/%20 when you go to download. i think that’s why it’s on by default in save for web.

Thanks for the reply. I’m aware that spaces/blanks are changed to %20, but underscores are absolutely acceptable (and preferable) in Unix (I do it all the time) so if Adobe is forcing the change to hyphen for Unix compatibility this is absolutely a bug.

The dialog box has been changed to underscore everywhere, no hyphen option has been selected. Perhaps there’s a work around, but I’ve not been able to find one, nor have I been able to find anyone that knows why it’s happening.

The search continues..

this is absolutely a bug.

A bug is something that doesn’t work as designed. Whether it’s designed properly is another matter altogether but it’s NOT A BUG.

Correction Bob, a bug is when the dialog box clearly says that it’s going to use an UNDERSCORE and then uses a HYPHEN anyway. Not sure why that’s beyond your ability to understand but I’ll suggest you read my post again and try to think things through before replying.

Oh yeah, thank you for adding your inaccurate and erroneous comment. Very helpful.

If you can’t add a worthwhile suggestion, then don’t reply.

there’s another option, mac compatability. that might be it?

bob’s a moderator here, ease up please.

Thansk Dave, but that’s not it either. I’d post a screen shot here if I could.

Regarding Bob all I can say is "Wow". If he’s a moderator, then he sure comes across as rude with his all caps NOT A BUG scream and should know better….

And I have more than enough professional development experience to know what is, and what is not, a bug. This walks like, smells like, talks like, and is, a bug…

Dialog boxes using drop downs should do nothing other than what is selected in the drop down; if and when they do, it is NOT proper behavior.

take a shot, upload it to <http://www.pixentral.com> then get the HTML link under the resulting image and paste that here.

he’s generally a nice and helpful guy, but lately he’s become a microsoft vista zombie. i try to cut him some slack since he’s had most of his soul and part of his mind sucked out. 😛 🙂

but he’s right. whatever it’s doing, it’s by design, hence, technically, not a bug, a "feature". i know there’s a way to turn that behaviour off somewhere in that s4w dialog, i just can’t recall where it is.

I would say that there is something wrong with your system. I have no idea what might be wrong.

I opened a tif file called 161.tif.
I saved it as 161.jpg.
I saved it as 161-1.jpg.
I saved it as 161_1.jpg.
All three jpg files exist in the folder.
I don’t "save for the web"; therefore, I forgot to use that option in CS3. However, I cannot duplicate your error.

While you are sorting out the bug (don’t ya love em – not!) Could you just rename the file after you saved it?

Thanks for the link dave. I didn’t know we could add images here, but I tried pixentral and it’s a great service.

Bob,

This behavior occurs regardless of XP (Pro/Media ctr)or Vista (Business 32) so unfortunately I don’t think an OS change will fix this.

I perused the help files to no avail before posting as I believe a little initiative on my part is required before seeking help. If you look in the output settings dialog box, Adobe illustrates how the file name should appear upon completion (see my dialog image above). N.B. Look at Adobe’s version as well as my red text…

Arguing over whether it’s poorly coded or poorly designed and poorly coded does no one any good. The bottom line is that it appears to be all of the above plus more; it’s poorly designed, poorly coded, and poorly tested. Adobe’s perfect trifecta…

Why make excuses for them?

I’m not making excuses for anyone but if I had a nickel for every "bug" post that turned out to be as designed or user error I’d be living on a beach somewhere. That aside there are two points here.

1. I’m still not convinced this a bug since SFW has been using hyphens for as long as I’ve used it. Never really cared about it to be honest so you may be right. But…

2. Even if it is a bug, reporting it here won’t do you any good. If you are convinced it’s a bug then post it here:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

I wouldn’t hold my breath on a fix, though. It really has no major functional impact and my guess is that there are higher priorities to get fixed.
