blend edge effect/frame

I can’t seem to find a simple way to do, I think, something very simple.

Forgive a Newbie…

I just want to blend the edge of a photo into the white background for use on the web so you don’t have the stark "edge".

One way to feather the picture into the white edge is to use a large white brush and vary the opacity. Another way that might give better result is to use gradient tool. Probably lots of other ways also.

Marquee select any shape around the area of the picture you want to keep. Feather the selection edge as much as you desire. Create a new layer by using layer copy command. Place a white layer under this one.
