I recently re-installed P/S 4.0 which I have been using without problems on this computer for years. I had rebooted the hard drive and when I reinstalled the program for 4.0 it indicated a successful installation. The program appears where it should in the "All Programs" menu, but when I click on it I get an error message: "There is not enough memory (RAM) to launch Phot0Shop." I am running Windows XP Home Edition, SP2, I have more than 500 MB of available RAM, and I have used this program on this and other computers for years. I am also using Norton 360. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a setting elsewhere I need to modify? I even tried installing the minimum version. Same result.

Are you talking about Photoshop 4.0 or Photoshop Elements 4.0?

IIRC, this was a problem if you have more than 512 megs of RAM with PS 4 (which is the better part of 15 years old). You can pull out some RAM to test it and it’s too late to upgrade but you might want to consider PS Elements.

Problem solved, thanks to Dave Milbut (above). I downloaded, installed and without further difficulty PS 4.0.01 now works. I’m still unclear about how having too much memory would cause the problem (Robert Levine), but I believe that is when I actually re-booted: I added a 512 card because my Norton 360 couldn’t function with the original 256 card alone. I redid the whole hard drive at that time, but left off the PS 4 until I needed it for a special job this week. Great forum! one of the few that has actually worked for me or than an antique tractor forum that helped me keep my old 2N Ford alive!

the program was written at a time when 64meg of ram was a lot. it probably runs out of address space trying to allocate the large amounts of memory that modern systems have.

Great forum!

So it is a deficiency in PhotoShop not in my computer? Fortunately I have another photo management program that does what I need anyway. But I do like PhotoShop for some uses.

the deficiency is that the program is almost 20 years old! 🙂 you should try the new photoshop elements. it blows the doors off of ps4 (and makes use of all the latest hardware). goes for about 80 bux, check amazon or walmart or some other legit reseller.

or you can go to <http://www.gimp.org> and download "the gimp" image editor for free. also a powerful app. i run the gimp on my non-photoshop machine for when i need to do some quick editing.

sometimes you can get photoshop elements for free with a piece of hardware (called an "OEM" version – can’t be resold without that hardware… i.e. can’t be "unbundled") say with a scanner or wacom digitizing drawing tablet.

"the deficiency is that the program is almost 20 years old!"

Ease up on the hyperbole, Dave. < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Photoshop_release_history> 🙂

But yeah…A new version of P.S. Elements may do a better job for what you need than an 11.6 year old version of Photoshop.

11 years real time is like 20 years computer time. like a dog year = 7 human years! 😀

(that’s my story and i’m sticking to it! :P)

I think it is more a deficiency in the operating system.
