My old laptop tried to self-destruct, so I was forced to move a huge amount of art files to a new laptop. Now, I have no thumbnails in Photoshop (PS3 using XP Professional) and oddly enough, it appears that often entire folders and files aren’t showing up when they’re actually there. The only thing I’m seeing is the PSD logo. .tifs, .jpgs, and other formats aren’t even showing up as being on the disk.

I’ve gone through all settings that I know of and can’t seen to find the ‘fix’. Any clues?

you probably had an older version of photoshop (7 or earlier) installed on the old system. those versions shipped a dll called psicon.dll that allowed you to view image icons of psd files in explorer.

adobe pulled that dll in vers. 8 (cs) because it was causing data loss for some users. the new way to view thumbnails of psds while browsing is to use bridge instead of explorer.

PS3? Are you referring to Elements?

Thanks, Dave:

I did once (long, long time ago) have PS7 and since I’d bought upgrades all along since then, I’d always had to install it, then go thru the crap on every new computer. This time, Adobe just gave me a code to get around that.

However, I did happen to have much of this on an external hard drive and I just now plugged it in and voila! All the thumbs are there. ???? So…why would these not display on the new hard drive when they display on the external?

Too strange.

And no, Robert. Sorry – that’s Photoshop CS3. I am not familiar with Elements.

if that dll is there as well it could be working for you. beware if you start seeing "cannot save because file is already open" errors in ps though!

Problem is….bridge isn’t showing the .jpgs or .tifs or .psd’s either in many cases.

While we’re on the subject, this has puzzled me for some time: If this .dll is so troublesome, why don’t they just, well, fix it?

Is it legal, or engineering?

Just curious, I’m perfectly happy using Bridge…

The problem with me is that our business has several computers and two of three simply don’t have the processor to run Bridge. So…we’ve used standard file browsing with ‘thumbnail’ chosen as the ‘view’ for some time.

It would, however, at a glance seem that it wouldn’t be difficult to build in support for this .dll issue and just issue a patch. I mean, it’s not like this is some cheap software, now is it?

The problem isn’t the dll file…it’s the operating system. And at this point with Bridge available the resourced to work around that problem would be wasted.

SukiM, are you able to see your old files as thubnails now?

what do you mean by:

it appears that often entire folders and files aren’t showing up when they’re actually there. The only thing I’m seeing is the PSD logo. .tifs, .jpgs, and other formats aren’t even showing up as being on the disk.

what do you mean "PSD logo" do you mean the file extension or some icon? do you see the actual "file name" of files?

Did you double check that you use the right view mode? e.g. thubnail mode? (from view menu in explorer). (If you did, then please don’t take it hard on me because its very simple :))

If only it was that simple.

As Bob said previously, it’s an OS problem not Photoshop i.e. Microsoft needs to fix it not Adobe.

Odd, tho – it’s the exact same operating system I had on the old computer. It’s the exact same version of Photoshop (CS3) – except that they (Adobe) had me do the ‘workaround’ for all these upgrades all these years, rather than my starting by installing PS7 and going thru all the upgrades I’ve bought all over the years. I think this is where the problem is.

Anyway, as stated previously (why isn’t my post here where I posted it earlier????) we have three computers for our business and only one has the processor that will support Bridge. So, the workaround IS important if the processor can’t handle bridge and crashes the entire system.

And Yani, what I’m seeing is the Photoshop icon instead of the thumbnail for .psd files.

Thanks. I knew I wasn’t crazy!

Bridge is fine if you have the system resources to run it. But if you don’t, then you’re pretty much floundering around, looking for files and wasting huge amounts of time.

I’ll try it manana and report back. Thanks.

Good luck. Just remember…don’t come back here crying about lost work if you decide to try this.

For XP and VISTA users, there is a new (free) app called ThumbView which displays PSD thumbnails in Explorer. I found it here: < http://www.seriema.net/thumbview/index.php?page=download_lit e>

Seems to work just fine with no side-effects, but as some have commented around here use care with CS2 and CS3 3rd pty applications.
