It seems there is a way to fix the sampling to a fixed position on the alt-click so that the cross does not move even though you are moving the brush. Is that correct and if so, how?

Are you asking about the aligned checkbox or something different?

How would that look, I wonder?

I want alt-click at one location and paint based on that sample. The aligned choice does not seem to accomplish this unless I am doing something wrong.

As mentioned by Donald, turn the "aligned" checkbox off and the sample area will remain the same no matter where you paint.

Also,be aware that unchecking that box does not hold all the time. not sure if its a recognized bug or not, but it constantly rechecks itself on my machine.
