I know how to create/save a custom New File preset for a particular page size, resolution, color space, etc. But how do I save one that includes guides, similar to the default video presets that contain Title Safe/Action Safe guides?

I’m currently (although a little lazily) composing a tutorial <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.1de5f905.59b4d00d/0> for doing that, Dan. I want to make sure I include all the proper info for Windows users as well.

In the meantime….see if this will get you where you need to go: Phos±four dots, "Centered guides" #13, 23 Mar 2008 11:57 am </webx?14/12>

The preset for this is a text file, which you’ll likely find at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Required\Default New Doc Sizes.txt

Note that this file is encoded in Unicode, and you’ll want to open it in Word or something similar, rather than Notepad, to retain the formatting.

The format for preset doc sizes without guides is pretty straightforward, for the ones with guides it’s a little more complex.

If you don’t want to wait for Phos’ tutorial, I would be sure to back up the text file before editing it.

Check the other link, John.

All of that info (1, 2) has been covered. If you look at the text file closely, you should see the pixel aspect designation is pretty straightforward and decipherable.

What’s kind of stalling me is that I’ve asked Chris Cox and John Nack about getting a list of all the syntax and definitions used to compose those presets text files, and—while I’m almost positive it’s nothing proprietary—they haven’t obliged my requests.

Maybe I should contact them again and remind them them. If I’m going to do this, I’d like it to be as definitive as possible. I’ve poked around online pretty thoroughly, and I haven’t seen it written out by anyone, except for the info I’ve compiled and posted a few places. If someone else has done it, they probably got a lot of their info from me.

Yeah, different places! I was just going to refer to another thread <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.3c058897>.

I may try to put together a script or a .NET program (depending on whether I can do it in javascript) to edit the new file defaults.
