Why would anyone want to save a file a a psd when they can save it as a tiff. I know that psd files are smaller, but why risk lack of compatibility and a non-universal format?
Thanks

Depends on its use. In InDesign for instance you can choose layers and layer comps with a PSD file right from within the layout.

For simple archiving, yes, TIF is just fine.

Adobe Systems holds the Copyright for the TIFF specification and can change it whenever and however they please. So I’d hardly call that a ‘universal format’. When Adobe came out with layered tiffs it let the whole world know that it’s theirs to do with as it pleases.

PSD is the format most compatible with Photoshop and, like most other major ‘mainstream’ file formats, PSD isn’t going to become obsolete anytime soon. At least not until computers themselves cease to work 🙂

One nice thing about layered tiffs though is their ability to use LZW compression so you can electronically send smaller (often MUCH smaller) ‘layered’ files to graphic artists compared to their Photoshop counterparts.

I think LZW is Unisys’s, isn’t it?

depending on the complexity of the image LZW can increase the size of the file. ZIP compression is probably the best compression to use although it can be slower to open.

If you are sending files by email its probably best to ZIP a file first.

Some more discussion on ZIP vs LZW. I think which compression to use depends dramatically on your work (vector/graphics vs contone image).

Unisys’s LZW patent expired a few years ago — I think 2004. Adobe had a license for its use in Photoshop (surprise!). So did most other commercial products where its use made sense.

Yes, Larry. I just don’t drop over the L. anymore. Too much of a bore.

I’ve got myself a ColorMunki, bt the way. Still unpacked. Next week I’ll start trying it 🙂

You, everything ok?

Hi Gustavo 🙂 We’re having ‘spanish weather’ up here ATM, wonderful!

Hi, Matt. We’re having the Irish one (wetter and wetter). Wonder what are they having over there at Ireland.

ColorMunki?

Had to google that! For the price, seems to be an interesting piece of gear.

I’m fine, Gus, except for the slowdown in work. My billing so far is abominable! Have to put off that Spain trip again, and even at that, the drop in the dollar makes it even harder.

Good to hear from you. I’ve been wondering about you the last couple of weeks.

Drop me a line 2 gusgsm google mail whenever you feel like it 😉

I’ve been spending a bit on the net with the drop of the dollar: ColorThink, ICS ColorEyes… 1’6 US$ = 1 euro makes room for a lot of cash.
