Hi,
I have a problem with CS3… When I want to print a 100x300cm or longer banner with Epson 9800 the print preview of Epson doesn’t show the complete document. A1 to B0 jobs has no problem. At the print preview 1/3 or 1/4 of the banner is blank…With CS2 there is no problem.
I install the updates for CS3 but problem is still on.
I sellected the PDF printer as default.(I read this in a forum) I have 2 9800, 1 9880 and 5 4800 on a network…
With CS3: If I save the banner in PSD, PDF, JPEG, TIF format doesn’t matter. Same problem. The funny thing if I try the job on Corel X3 as JPEG it doesn’t read anything on some PC’s, the print preview is blank. Some PC’s read the document with Corel X3.
I think I have to go back to CS2…….

It sounds like you’re running into a lenght limitation with the Epson print driver, which typically limits you to a page length of something like 92 inches. But that doesn’t explain why it works in CS2. You might want to check out out some of the Epson and wide-format print forums on Yahoo to see if anyone there can help.

The 9800 driver is not limited to 92" – that’s the realm of the 2000 and below series printers.

CS3 printing is just plain broken – Adobe said as much by saying that it wasn’t up to Adobe to test all the printer drivers, but up to the printer manufacturers to write drivers for Photoshop – a reversal of the way versions CS2 and below had approached things.

I usually use CS2 for printing – occasionally I have a brain fade and use CS3 to save time, but that invariably wastes ink and paper (and the time I’m trying to save).

It’s not always consistent nor predictable as what will go wrong – today I wasted three A3+ sheets of photo paper in an R2400 printer, plus half a bucket of ink doing cleaning cycles because it was printing some weird stripy thing in a small partial section of the image (always the same spot) that looked a bit like blocked jets at first. Eventually looking under magnification showed the stripes to have curves and pointy ends, so couldn’t be blocked jets (the nozzle check showed them to be clear as well).

Scratching head, thinking "this don’t make sense", and then the brain fade eased – damn, CS3 printing!

Printed the same file immediately in CS2 with no changes to the file or printer – and the stripes were gone….. <Gomer Pyle>Surprise! Surprise!</Gomer Pyle>

See John Nack’s blog for the whole sordid history of the CS3 printing mess, and a lesson in complete denial.

I’m still shaking my head in disbelief at the temerity of his attitude Fred.

Just recently in the EpsonWideFormat group on Yahoo there was someone having a problem with WinXP and CS3. They couldn’t print longer than 88". But they did say CS2 was printing correctly. Both were using the Epson Windoze driver. Folks on the Mac report no problem printing over 90" with the Epson driver. Seems to be specific to the Windoze, CS3 and Epson driver combination. QImage overcomes the limitation by tiling prints automagically.
