Hi, I’m using Photoshop 7 and I am not very experienced. The effect I wish to achieve is one of an aircraft bursting out of another object i.e. a wall or similar. I have tried just applying a gradient to a layer mask but I need something a little more dramatic.

If anyone knows how to achieve this or can point me in the way of a good tutorial I would be most appreciative.

Many thanks
Alan

I’m not picturing what you are trying to do. Can you describe it in a little more detail? Do you have a screen shot we could look at?

Well, from what I can deduce about what you’re after, you’ll not only need some top-notch Photoshop skills to do what you want, but also a traditionally skilled artist’s eye and sensibility as well.

Are you sure you want to tackle this straight away?

This isn’t something for which there will be one set tutorial. It’s the sort of imagery that will bring a multitude of skills to bear, and it would put even a seasoned vet through the wringer.

I’m sorry to say this, but if you’re asking here about how to do it, you’re nowhere near ready to do it well.

Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate that this will be no easy task.

I have 2 images, one is of a jet plane flying approx towards the camera but not exactly head-on, about 45 degrees and flying slightly upwards. The other image is very basic, it is just a chevron > flat on the screen, but very large and bold, the size is almost a portrait A5. What I had in mind was to have the jet plane appear as if it is coming from within the chevron, not necessarily exploding from the chevron or passing right through it, but just appearing from the chevron. The nearest I have got is applying a gradient to a layer mask, this is ok but does not give the sense of drama I am looking for.

Again, I know this is not straight forward, but any tips or directions on how to go about this would be most welcome.

Many thanks

Alan:

Maybe post some small versions to pixentral.com for folks to play with?

Alan.

I’m guessing at what you are trying to do but see if this is close.

– Each image on its own layer
– The chevron in the back, the plane in the front of course – Airplane should be extracted or cutout so it is the only thing in the layer with everything else transparent on that layer
– Use Ctl-T to resize the airplane so it is larger than the chevron since it is in the foreground – you are trying to simulate perspective
– Move the airplane around on the screen until it overlaps (partially) the chevron – Perhaps try some of the blur filters to simulate motion of the plane. Make it look like it is flying toward you.
– Add a background (sky, color, whatever) on a third layer behind everything else

Play around with layers and filters to see what works. It will not be an easy task and will take some time. BE SURE to work on copies of your original images so you don’t inadvertently overwrite them.

I hope this will help you get started.

Ah-HAH! The better description of what you actually want to do makes things much clearer.

Bursting from or through something—which I assume would entail creating the look of damage and perhaps some flying debris—is a project that would be quite complicated.

Merely having the jet partially hidden by another object—this "chevron" you mention—as it passes from behind to in front of it is a MUCH simpler task.

Looks like the other respondents have your request covered.

Thanks to everyone for all your help, in reply to J Maloney I’ve done as you requested and posted a link to pixentral.com. This is what I have at the moment, nothing fantastic, but if anyone has any ideas on how to improve and make it more dramatic please get back to me.

The link is:

I hope this works, its the first time I’ve done anything like this, so let me know if there is a problem.

Again many thanks to you all, I really do appreciate it.
