I’m looking to buy or build a 64 bit Vista system. I do photography (photoshop) and I figure if I need a new system and 3gb is just not enough so
64 bit Vista is it.

my criteria:
Core 2 Duo
8 or better yet 16gb support – Not particular about the type of memory should I be?
6+ SATA (some external would be nice)
6+ USB
Firewire
Gbit Network

Good dual monitor supported video card – triple would be a bonus. At some point I may double up on the video card – (I’m not a gamer).

Any Ideas??? If your running 64bit did you buy or build? if it workd great – what are your specs???

Thanks
Joe

Until Adobe comes out with a 64 bit version of Photoshop, rumored to be in production, there is no practical use for Vista 64 and worse drawbacks than with Vista 32.
And if you do not know what you would need to build a machine that should be able to actually use more than two of its ram slots at a time then you need to do much more research.

I do photography and the 2 gig on my XP machine is plenty. I wouldn’t touch Vista with a shitty stick (just my opinion, if it works for for you I am very happy for you)
Vista needs at least 30% more RAM (OS overheads) than XP just to run MSOffice, which isn’t as memory intensive as PS so do the math. I’ve just bought 12 new laptops for a customer, all loaded with Vista, but come with an MS supplied XP disc to allow roll back. now why would that be? I built my current machine to run XP64 bit, which I used for a few months but gave up with it as I didn’t see much speed benefit even with 4BG RAM, the case of diminishing returns?
This and the difficulty in finding some drivers and AV and spyware utilities drove me back to 32 bit.
When MS stop supporting XP, I will be buying a MAC and running my windows apps (faster) through bootcamp.
New OS releases a just a scam to force people into buying new hardware IMHO

if you want some good storage options and reliability.
switch over to Linux.

i would recomend:

1. a storage PC: linux, SATA HDD {as much as u want}, Gbit ethernet

2. a desktop pc, 2 video cards, solid state hdd {nearly as fast as RAM}, so u end up with something like 64 GB’s of ram 🙂
also a ram of 2GB with windows XP
but the most important part, keep the pc tuned up for performance.

do storage on one PC and editing and stuff on other.
will provide u speed as well as reliability.
connect both with a gigabit ethernet.
