I have 7.0 (after the problem started I upgraded to 7.0.1 on windows XP. The program opens fine. When I choose to open a file, the directory opens for second, then the whole program immediately closes. No error message, no anything, just shut down. If I chose open recent, I can select a file and it loads fine. If I navigate to the directory and doubleclick the file, it opens the program with the file loaded. I have reinstalled and upgraded, no change. Does anyone have any ideas? Hellllp.
thank-you

See this FAQ:

Mathias Vejerslev "Computer locks up, shuts down, or reboots while running Photoshop" 6/5/03 4:49pm </cgi-bin/webx?13/1>

Note the remark that says it cannot be caused by application software.

He said the application shuts down, not the whole computer…

Ah… subtle distinction that I didn’t catch – Chris you’re SO picky! My apologies Reevash.

Hi: Reevash is a lady, just for your info. I am running PS 7.0.1. At the reisk of sounding like an idiot, I can’t seem to find the preference file to delete it? I went into preferences in edit and did not find a key to "reset all", I tried the c,a,s combo when PS was loading to get the "reset" question, it di not come up. Major frustration has set in. I have no backups of my images. I do have backups of my docs in InDesign. I can’t relink any images from there.
Help me please????

The procedure for resetting preferences is in the faq. Also, this knowledgebase article describes their location on various OS’s.

I had a similar problem on a Dell 620 Workstation with SCSI drivers. Any kind of directory manipulation (Opening, Saving, File Browsing, etc) could cause Photoshop to vanish (quit without a trace). After lots of debugging with Dell, I found that the SCSI controller was bad. I replaced it and have had no similar problems since.

Thanks for all your responses and help. Just a follow-up. I deleted my preferences and that had no affect. I moved all the images to a different directory, quite a feat considering I couldn’t keep the folder open. There is damages file in there somewhere. Thought I found it but, no.
Now I have to relink all the images. Is there any way to do this in bulk instead of image by image.

I don’t understand this remark. Did you use Windows Explorer to move them?

What do you mean "re-link"?

I used the command prompt and the old reliable DOS move command.

That doesn’t help much. Relink? Keep a folder open?

If you used dos to move stuff, shoulda been a breeze. Still don’t get the relink remark either.
