In the title bar of the image in PS (CS3 on Vista 32b, in my case) it is indicated what "mode" the picture is in (Image>Mode), eg for an RGB picture with 16 bit color depth it says "[file name] @ [scaling] (RGB/16)".
The bit depth can be followed by various symbols. I have seen for example: (RGB/16*)
