Can someone look at the images on this page:

http://www.keepsmilingplumbing.com/fairview/images.htm

and point me to a (hopefully) simple way to achieve this effect in either Photoshop or Fireworks? I don’t have the image yet, but I want to place it in the top masthead and fade it from the grey masthead color to full image. Anyone know of an online tutorial that covers this? I tried yesterday without success; I’m a complete novice in both programs.

for starters, open imange in PS. Duplicate layer. Beneath this layer ceate a new layer filled will say, white. Highlight the duplicate layer and add a layer mask. Have foreground color set to black and background color set to white. Choose the gradient tool and apply it to the layer mask. Playing around with the fg/bg ground colors and the gradient and the color of the filled layer can create different
