Hello,
My new Windows Vista is a 64 bit. Can I safely install my old Photoshop 7, which is probably 32 bit, onto my new Windows Vista? What kind of problems could there be?

you can, but if it will work is anyone’s guess.

You can try but all bets are off.

Give it whirl, you may be one of the lucky ones. FWIW, CS3 runs beautifully on Vista Ultimate 64 and this will probably be your last chance at upgrade pricing since 7.0 is the earliest version eligible.

Given that CS4 will be available in a 64 bit version you should give upgrading serious consideration.

Thank you both Bob and Dave.

Is CS3 terribly different than Photoshop 7? Will I need to be retrained intensively? I do not need anything else that Photoshop 7 doesn’t already offer, except for the ability to install it onto my new Windows Vista. I guess I just want to keep on doing the same things that I used to do on my Photoshop 7. I’m not a professional and am just scanning and touching up my old photographs and negatives.

nope. just has some new features. everything you used to do, you still can.

well i can say it does offer lots of improvements for that. i’m not a pro either and i use it for pretty much what you do, plus making things like invitations and thank you cards and the like. things like smart sharpen and the hilight/shadow adjustment setting and photo filters and the healing tools really make working with your old photos so much easier than with 7! i’d say the upgrade is worth it just for the hilight/shadow stuff. you’d be amazed at how much detail there is in many pictures that look almost totally black to the eye!

and like we said, if you want a feature later, you’re going to wind up paying full price again instead of just the upgrade price because when cs3 came out, they instituded a no upgrades prior to 3 versions back. right now that’s 7. when cs4 comes out, people with 7 lose their ability to buy at upgrade price.

just watch for the cs4 announcement. some people are guessing around holiday season 2008 (this year) as a release date. adobe’ll usually announce about a month ahead of time.

if you buy the upgrade to photoshop cs3 AFTER the cs4 announcement, but before it ships, you’ll be eligible for a free upgrade to cs4 when it is released. at least that’s how it’s gone in the past.

just this past upgrade cycle i went from illustrator 9 to cs2 after the cs3 announcement and got illy cs3 for free (5 bux shipping) when it shipped.

good luck,
dave

I moved from V7 to CS3 less than a year ago. There are some new features in CS3, but all of the old feature work about the same.
Since I do not know you, I can’t say whether you will need retraining or not. I didn’t.
