I’ve recently purchased photoshop 7.0.1. I had version 5.0 previously and had been using third party plug-ins by Extensis. When I am trying to install them into 7.0, it tells me it cannot locate photoshop.exe. Can anyone give me some insight to what I’m doing wrong? Or does 7.0 not support my older plug-ins?

Thanks…
Mickey

Mickey,

The problem you are having with your Extensis plug-ins can be corrected by going to the Extensis website and downloading the appropriate updated version of your plug-ins. Note that if you happen to have PhotoTools 3.06, Extensis did not bump the version number to 3.07 as you might expect. However, what is currently shown as PhotoTools 3.06 is in fact an updated version.

What happened to cause the problem is that Adobe changed the name of the Photoshop executable when they released Photoshop 7.0. In prior versions it had been called "photoshp.exe" but is now "photoshop.exe". The Extensis installers still look for the older file name and then fail to proceed when they cannot find it. As simple as the problem is, you can also work around it by copying "photoshop.exe" to a second "photoshp.exe" file in the same directory. However, while I have found that to work, I would encourage you to go ahead and get the updates since they may well address other problems, particularly in the case of PhotoTools.

Note if you haven’t registered your plug-ins with Extensis, you’ll need to do so in order to be able to access and download the free updates. Here is the starting point if you are already registered: <http://www.extensis.com/support/dl_page.html>

Thanks for the feedback! I’m going to go to Extensis and see if I can get updates. The plug-ins that I am having problems with are PhotoFrame and MaskPro. If this doesn’t work, then I’ll call Adobe.

Mickey,

For what it’s worth, I’m certain this isn’t an Adobe problem other than their departure from the past use of the "photoshp.exe" file name. But, that’s not really a problem except in how it might impact other 3rd party products as you’ve seen with Extensis. I vaguely recall helping out some other Extensis users with this same issue and I think there were some who used each of the plug-ins you mentioned. If the updates didn’t resolve their problem, then simply copying/renaming the PS executable did. Another thing to keep in mind also is that some Extensis plug-ins seem to cause problems with others, if one is an older version than another. If you see any problems with either PhotoFrame or MaskPro, you might try reinstalling them in reverse order from your first attempt.

Good luck,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

I was able to download an update for PhotoFrame, but not for the MaskPro for some reason. Well, PhotoFrame loaded… Yeah! And then I resorted to your "expertise" and copied the exe file and renamed it. Voila! It worked! Just wanted to let you know and say thank you very much for your help!

And thanks to you, Mickey, for expressing your appreciation about the help. Many folks don’t, and replies like that are a nice bit of reward for the free time and effort we all put in here.

Payback is another issue altogether. What makes us really happy is when visitors learn well and help others in kind. In fact, answering question—making sure your research is sound and the info you provide is dead-solid and well written—is a good way to learn. Doing this has taught me a lot over the years.

I understand the payback part, Phosphor! I’ve been looking through the posts to see if there may be something I can contribute to. I totally forgot that there was this forum and was about to contact Adobe for assistance. Then the lightbulb came on and it got me here. :~) I’m glad you are all here to help out and I hope that I may be able to also.

Hope you’re having a great weekend.

Simultaneous warm fuzzies and deja`vu.

Mickey, not too long ago I was "new" here also–I can’t tell you how excited I was when I posted my first response to a thread as a person giving advice and was told it solved the problem—it was "orgasmic!"

If this doesn’t work, then I’ll call Adobe.

that still doesn’t solve the unable to update problem. you’ll need to follow the instructions in the link I gave you. the update contains a bunch of bug fixes, especially in the file browser, some in the multiply layer mode, the KPT3 lockup problem, the tga plugin and probably a couple dozen more i don’t know about. then there’s the fact that ps8 is right around the corner. you should get it straightened out now before customer service is swamped dealing w/a new full version upgrade.

peace, and welcome to the asylum! 🙂

Mickey,

I’m glad I was able to help.

Tony,

’tweren’t too tough to figure out…with the work I’ve done getting Extensis Photobars to work with PS7, I experienced this same problem early on with the Extensis plug-ins, as have numerous other folk.

Dave,

Somewhere in Mickey’s post, I think you must’ve misread something. He wasn’t having any problem with the PS7.01 updater but rather with the Extensis plug-ins themself. Regardless, the info you provided regarding the PS7.01 update may still be of use to him in the long run.

Hi Guys,

Ummm, just FYI (and how would you know?) I’m a "she." ;~)

I am thinking the problem with me not being able to download the update for Extensis MaskPro is that my version is only 1.0 and I never upgraded to 2.0. I looked around their website and the oldest version I saw was 2.0, making me think that mine is just too old! In fact, that’s why I ended up buying the complete version of PS7 recently, since I’ve been running on PS5 since it came out. I guess I’ve been out of the circuit for so long, that I didn’t realize that PS8 is about to launch. Guess I need to get my favorite piece of plastic out, again! lol

RE Extensis: I was receiving an error and was told to contact the webmaster, which I did, and explained that the update was not working on that particular item. I even thought there might be the possibility that I forgot to register it, way back then, and registered it again today. Then I tried to download the update again, getting the same message to contact the webmaster. That is when I tried copying and renaming the PS.exe file, as suggested, which solved my dilema for today.

I did download the update for PS7.0.1 tho, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for all your wisdom!

Oops…once again, foiled by the presumption of one’s gender. Sorry ’bout that Mickey. I guess we just need videoconferencing in these forums…NOT!

If I had thought to ask which version of MaskPro you were using, I could’ve saved you a bit of trouble about the update. Sure enough, Extensis only provides updates for the most current version of their products, at least as far as I know. If renaming the Photoshop executable worked OK for you, just be wary of any apparent operational problems with MaskPro. I vaguely recall comments about problems in the use of MaskPro that may have been related to using version 1.0 with PS7. A search of the forum might turn up some help in that direction.

Thanks Daryl and no prob on the gender deal! lol I’ve been known as a "tomboy" all my life and get snail mail to "Mr. Mickey" blah blah…

I rarely use MaskPro, hence never upgraded it, but just grabbed the stack of plug-ins and filters that I’ve had in PS5 and decided to load them into PS7.

* **I could’ve saved you a bit of trouble about the update***

I might just take MaskPro out with the subtle warnings of pending problems that may occur. And if I want MaskPro that bad, I guess I buy 3.0! Now, PhotoFrame I use often. That was a "must" to get operating, so the information of the update was very helpful. I have been running both PS5 and PS7 at the same time so that I would still have access to PhotoFrame. I would do my framework in PS5 and then open the project in PS7 to finish my postwork. Now I just hope that these all work when PS8 comes out!

Mickey,

No need to rush and remove MaskPro. As I mentioned, I think that may have been the "iffy" plug-in with respect to its working properly with PS7, but I could be wrong. Surprisingly for it being late at night now, I’m even thinking now that it was something to do with the zoom tool…if there is such a tool in MaskPro. In any case, I suggest you keep it installed until confirming there truly are problems with it. Goodness knows I’ve been wrong before and that could easily be the case now.

Hey Daryl,

Yes, there is a zoom tool in MaskPro, so I can tell you have a very good memory! ;~) If that’s what the problem may be, then I’ll leave it for now. Like I said before, I don’t use it that often, so if I have problems, I guess I’ll just buy the latest version. It’s not going to hurt anything if it’s just sitting idle in PS. I will take the advise of you very wise people here at the forum, that have vast amounts of knowledge in comparison to me… ;~) (mick kneels on one knee to the computer gurus) lol I do want to say tho, I sincerely appreciate all the help I’ve been receiving in just the short time I’ve been here!

I want to say since I’ve purchased PS7, I have been having a blast making my own brushes and using my Wacom tablet with it. My airbrush should be here tomorrow, so more fun and experimenting is upon me!

Have a great day! Mickey
