I recently encountered a problem that I am sure could be corrected if I were more experienced.

I am building a website using Dreamweaver. I adjust my photos for size In Photoshop Cs3 of course. I then save them for the web on a transparent background as a gif. When I view my image in Dreamweaver the edge of the image appear pixelated (sort of a white aoutline)
I would like to feather some of my images but when I save them and then include them in my webpage the feathered edge is visible as a white outline shadow. The images are fine otherwise.

This also happens if I add a layer style to text such as bevel. The bevel area appears as a large white outline.

I am sure there is a setting I am not aware of. Should I have a specific setting when I save the images for the web?

I really would appreciate a suggestion
Thanks
Tina

When saving to web make sure you have ‘none’ selected for matte option.

Hi Curt: thanks for the assistance. I indicated the Matte setting as you suggested. It is a lot better but I still get fringes of "splatter" around the selected area of the image which show once
brought into a dark background.

The effect I am looking for is to have a large feathered area around my image on the web page. Is there any other method I could try?

Thanks

Tina,

One option is to make the image "anticipate" the background it’s going to have on the site. Create your image on that BG.

Or use the png format. Gif has 1 bit transparency. This means that a pixel has either a colour, or is completely transparent. (which is one of it’s colours)

PNG however can have eight bit transparency, meaning the transition from solid colour to complete transparency can have 256 levels, or steps.

Hi Rob: thanks. I can come close to anticipating the background color, but At times I use backgrounds with a slight pattern. This is a personal web page so I can get quite creative!!

Anyhow I used the png format and tried the Refine Edge option (I do not know if it made any difference since I was using the "Select – Feather option").

The png is working much much better so I can be happy for now!!

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to help
