I have Photoshop 7.0 currently installled and recently purchased Photoshop CS3. Do I have to un-install PS 7.0? Or can I do a regular install of PS CS3. Are there any outstanding issues I need to know before installing?

Windows XP, Dell Optiplex 620 Pent. D, 1GB Ram, 80GB HD

Thank you!
Fred

Assuming you purchased an upgrade, just go ahead and install it.

It will be a new application in its own directory.

And your old version will still be available when you discover the shortcomings of CS3!

Both versions can be installed but only one can be run at a time. Plugs-in that work with the newer or older version may not work with the other. Therefore do not tell one version that there are additional plug-ins available from the other version.

John Thank you! for replying. I have a couple of follow-up questions. It’s a brand new purchase on CD not an upgrade, will this affect the install? I would really like to keep PS 7.0 available. Also what are the shortcomings of CS3? The reason why I wanted the upgrade is we have launched new EPS Co. logos and my PS 7.0 version will not open them, the company that created said we need CS2 and up. I thought I was making the logical choice to go with the latest?

Let me get this straight. A company is supplying you with new file versions of your logos and telling you that?

Tell them to provide high res raster versions as well as vector versions.

Now, to attempt to answer you questions. CS3 is not going to run very quickly on that machine. It’s underpowered and doesn’t have very much RAM. For small file, it should be okay.

CS3 is shipped on DVD, not CD.

The installation will have no affect on version 7 with the exception of becoming the default association for files in Windows.

will this affect the install?

No, no problem.

what are the shortcomings of CS3?

Mainly dodgy printing and no ImageReady.

I thought I was making the logical choice to go with the latest?

It is not only logical it is the only version officially on sale now.

Did you know you can upgrade PS 7 (and keep it available) for $100s less than the full program?

Fred: If the company logo is a vector EPS, you may want to look at Illustrator for that instead. You should consider getting one of the CS Suites which would have both apps plus others.

Thank you all for your quick response! It is very much appreciated.

The way we order software is a process! I was trying to save some money without ordering the CS3 suite. I will probably order Illustrator later this yr.

John/Bart, from what I read on Adobe’s site I did not qualify for the PS update price.

Robert your right that is not acceptable from the vendor and they are working to clear up. I will also look into upgrading my ram and video.

At least I can install and keep my PS7 with Image Ready.

regards,
Fred

the cost of the suite (upgrade from PS7) is about the same as the full price of Photoshop
