Dynamic Brush Not Working

I’m having issues with the shape dynamics feature. It should be simple, but when I choose "shape dynamics" nothing changes. Any suggestions?
Thanks very much for the help. I’m using Photoshop CS3.

Just checking shape dynamics doesn’t do anything, you have to change some of the parameters (size jitter, etc).

yes, i know, but nothing is changing. the shape should change immediately in the diaglogue box to reflect that shape dyanmics has been checked. that’s not happening either. It’s specfically the minimum diameter that is not reflecting changes. Size jitter works.
