Hey guys,

I started a new project. I set the file criteria for 4" wide 5" high, 300 resolution, CMYK.

When I save the file as a JPEG and export it for print the image is huge. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

I check the settings again, after noticing they are huge, and the settings show it’s still 4" wide 5" high, with 1200 pixels wide, 1500 pixels high.

What am I doing wrong? How can I avoid it on future projects, and how can I fix this project?

Thanks!!!

Well… 4" wide (at 300ppi) x 300 = 1200 pixels which is correct.

Try 4" x 5" at 72ppi for screen use…

Better still work in PIXELS which are an accurate, fixed size, NOT dpi which scales the size.

It’s a PPI v DPI issue

4 x 5 @ 300 ppi would be 1200 x 1500 pixels. CMYK JPGs will compress surprisingly little compared to their RGB brethren.

And because of their lossyness Jpegs are not recommended for print.

Anything I can do to get the file to come out 4"x5"? I’m not sure what options I have.

Thanks!

You’re not confusing 300 ppi with 1200/1500 pixels ?

reset the preferences, then restart photoshop and check the image size again. if it’s not 300 ppi make sure you uncheck "resamle" and change it to 300ppi.

The image is the same size that you specified. "300 resolution" means (to me) 300 pixels per inch. That is what your image now has.

There is nothing to fix.

Sorry for confusing you guys. I’ve been working 80 hours this week, and I guess my cognitive ability has been impaired, LOL. I’m sending the files via JPEG to a friend, who in turn is taking them to FedEx kinko’s to have them printed out. When she opens the files for print she says the come out way too large. I’ll send her TIFFs as well and see if that helps.

Won’t make any difference. They are complaining about the size of the image when printed at whatever dpi they are using. You should change the number of pixels in the image. Perhaps your friend can determine what dpi setting they are using.

agreed, if you’re sending jpgs maybe the resolution info is getting stripped (using save for web?) pdf or tif files will retain the ppi setting.
