After dozens of hour of installing and uninstalling CS2, trying every hint and suggestion I found on the internet. I finally figured out a way to get it done.

No matter what I did, I got the message:
"Your adobe photoshop username, organisation or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must exit."

The answer is to change the install directory to "c:\progra~2\adobe" Or you can install it to some other directory that does NOT include "program files" in the name…

Hope this saves someone the headaches that I experienced…

After more stuggles, I recommend the following…

1) Activate the Vista Administrator account, and log in as the actual administrator. (instructions can be found all over the web)
2) Create a Vista Restore Point
3) Copy the CS2 discs to the desktop. Create a folder called CS2 on the desktop. copy the first disc into that folder, then copy the subsequent disks to the "Adobe Creative Suite 2.0" directory in the CS2 directory on your desktop.
4) Right click on the Setup file in the "CS2\Adobe Creative Suite 2.0\" directory and choose Properties, Compatibility, Run in Compatibility Mode for XP SP2.
5) Double Click on Setup.
6) This is important – Install to "c:\programs\adobe" Do NOT install to "progra~2" or "Program Files" or this will cause you much grief later on.
7) Right click on the Vista Start Button and choose "Explore all Users" Brouse to the various Adobe Program Shortcuts then choose "Properties, Compatibility, Run in Compatibility Mode for XP SP2" for each program shortcut.

After far too many battles, this seems to be the best way to get the job done…

W84Wind: I had no problem whatsoever installing CS2 under Vista 64 and it has worked like a charm for the last 12+ months. It does not run in compatibility mode either.

One of the peculiarities of installing many programs under any flavor of that awesome software called Vista is that to get it to install you may have to right click on the install executable and click on run as administrator. With some programs, many PS plug-ins require this, the first time you start the program and it will ask for a serial number you again have to right click on the icon and run as administrator.
However, this being Vista, what constitutes administrator privileges is not consistently defined or implemented in the OS. In fact, you can be logged in as the administrator and for reasons known only to Microsoft still not be granted administrator privileges without right clicking through many sub-menus of poorly defined arcana.
Having been walked through this by Microsoft, and it still did not work, I can sympathize with those willing to pay ultra-premium prices for the cruddy mid-level Intel hardware that Apple peddles.
