Hey All,

I’m going to do some simple two color or maybe process color business cards and only have photoshop 7 right now to use. I know this is not the ideal program to use like pagemaker and Qaurk, but it’s all I have right now. Just wondering what the best format and color mode to use would be and what the best way is to present the document to a commercial printer. THanks for any help

work with your printer FIRST.

But, I highly recommend www.postcardpress.com

download their templates.

There is no realllly good way to hand off business card files to a commercial printer.
Their work flow is geared up for precut paper sizes and multi-cards per printed sheet.
Your text suffers the most because their digital typesetter outputs straight to the printing plate. Your text is digitized and is laid down as an image. If you are doing a short run and have access to a color printer, look into printing your own using Avery 8871 precut business card sheets. Been to many a trade show with 50 cards printed the night before.

1) Place your cards on a 81/2 x 11 document.
2) Go to Kinko’s.
3) Buy a paper trimmer.

I have a sheet with my card in different color shades and have it printed on clear plastic.
The cost is really low, the look is terrific and the card alone got me jobs…designing cards!.
I print on demand and when I get bored of my card (who doesn’t after a while?) I make a new one.
PS, I use Photoshop only. The file is a Tiff Adobe RGB and I have the fonts on the CD for Kinko’s.

I am intrigued by your suggestions, but do not understand the method! What is Kinko’s (a commercial printer?)
Could you give a fuller explanation?

You bring them your files on a CD and they print (while you wait if you are lucky)
Open 24/24

However, their quality and service varies greatly from location to location. Here in Houston, you are a masochist if you don’t go to a competitor. In San Franciso, they’re great.

Caveat Emptor.

Of course, printer shops may have the best machines to do the job but if they are operated by people not giving a s*** about their work… I learned to treat these people nicely, and I always get a good service Same with photolabs.

I’ve used PS to make all of our business cards for several years. Provided you can live with the type limitations, it’s a piece of cake. Just find a service bureau that will give you a profile for their printer & paper (or have them give you the CMYK settings), do your work and save as an unflattened CMYK .pdf file (so you don’t rasterize the type) and hand it to them. Simple stuff, and you get *exactly* what you want.

Find a bureau that understands PS, and they’ll take care of you. Good luck.

Are you using process color, or two color offset, or laser printer?

In Fort Collins and in Albuquerque, all of their employees are in serious need of a rigid Dale Carnegie course, and I don’t recommend that to many people. If their overwhelming dork factor doesn’t send you straight back out the door, their manners surely will.
