I am using CS2 (windows) and still in the learning process. I have the standard suite and do pretty well with InDesign … not so with Photoshop and Illustrator. I know how to feather all sides of an image. Can someone please tell me how to feather just one side or 2 sides? Can this be done?

Thank you … Linda

Rest assured it can, and in about 20 different ways too…

Here’s one:

Near the bottom of the toolbar is a button with a circle on it (shortcut Q). This switches between normal node and quick-mask mode.

With your selection active, type Q and watch the selection turn into a colored overlay. This overlay, or quick-mask, behaves just like a "normal" image and can be worked on with the standard painting tools, like a soft brush or eraser, or blur tool.

You can even make "normal" selections on it.

Type Q again, and the standard marching ants come back, modified.

Another, IMO even simpler way is to add an empty mask to a layer, then apply a linear gradient to the mask channel…

Actually, I think subtracting unfeathered selections from the feathered one is the quickest, but of course not as precise.

Thank you for all your answers. To be more precise in my question. I own a small advertising business. I layout my publications in InDesign. However, when it comes to headings for special sections, I pay a graphic designer. I could save those dollars if I can figure out how to do this myself. The heading is a solid color that fades or feathers into a picture. Is there someone who would like to see what I am trying to do and advise me on how I might do this myself? I can direct you to a sample of what I want to do. I am new to the forums … would I be permitted to list my website so that you could see the heading style I am trying to accomplish?

Thanks so much … Linda

The heading is a solid color that fades or feathers into a picture.

That could be done by you in InDesign.

John … you say I can do this in In Design. How would I do it in InDesign (cs2)? Is there a way to show what I am trying to do? Are there rules against posting a website? I have the booklet on the website. I have nothing to sell … just would like to learn how I can save some money by doing this task myself.

Thanks for your help … Linda

There are no rules against posting links to images or web sites if they are not spam.

I hesitate to help you since I only came to ID with CS3 and don’t want to tell you things not possible in CS2.

Bob Levine may come and advise here (or you can post in the ID forum).

Thanks … you’re right. I wasn’t thinking about going into the ID forum. I just posted my question there. Hopefully I’ll get some replies. Thanks so much … Linda
