Flashing windows in Photoshop

Hi! I recently had to reformat my computer and decided to try a Photoshop trial to see if it was worth upgrading from my ancient Photoshop 7. I am experiencing a problem where the window with the image I’m working on keeps flashing–kind of a quick white strobe. I have used Photoshop 7 without this problem, but when I uninstalled CS and reinstalled my old copy of 7, the problem persisted. The flashing seems to randomly happen only when I am actually trying to paint/erase/blue, etc.

It does not seem to seriously impact the program itself, but the constant flashing when I try to focus on the image is giving me a severe headache. I have tried everything that I could think to do, but nothing works–is there anything that I can do to stop this?

See if there is a newer driver for your video card.

Reset your monitor refresh rate to the highest it will allow. Your reformat likely set this back to its default.

And… what Curve said.

Thanks for the advice! ^_^

I updated my video card drivers yesterday after this started, but it didn’t help. I just went in and set the monitor to its highest refresher rate and restarted the computer…but it unfortunately did not work either.

Does the flashing go away when you hold down the spacebar?

That sounded like the oddest thing when I read it, but sure enough, when I held down the spacebar, the flashing stopped. I even tried screwing around with things to see if the random flashing would happen, but it didn’t. O.o

Is that an indicator of a problem, or something that I can do to make permanent?

(Granted, I’m almost expecting Murphy’s Law to kick in immediately after I post this, it’s start up again with the spacebar down X-D)

Photoshop uses a software generated cursor for certain tools, such as the selection cursor and others. The idea is to simulate a Macintosh cursor, changing the color to make the cursor visible on a variety of backgrounds.

Pressing the space bar causes the cursor to change to the hand cursor, which uses the video hardware, instead of Photoshop’s software cursor.

So – now that we know the cause of the problem, the solution is to make sure that your video board is working correctly. I’d start by making sure that your hardware accelerator slider is all the way to the right in your display settings.

It’s worth some effort to make sure that you really are using the latest drivers, and whether anyone else on this list has the same video board and is not having problems.

I did some more tinkering with the video card, but to no avail. So I decided to go out and buy a new AGP video card for my older computer, but instead came out with a new computer that was on sale and a 512 PCI card. (call it a horrible impulse buy ^_^’)

If this doesn’t fix it, I don’t know what will. X-D Thanks again for all of your help!

Bought a new computer? Heck, anyone could fix it that way, LOL.

Seriously, glad you got a faster better machine. You’ll love it.

ps7 won’t be upgradable when cs4 is released. you’d need to repurchase a full version license if you wanted a new version. something to keep in mind while thinking it over.

ps7 won’t be upgradable when cs4 is released.

We don’t know that for a fact. This will only be true if Adobe continues its three versions back policy. For all anyone knows it may go to four versions back.

That said it will certainly be prudent for anyone three versions back on any software to keep an eye on things.

I think I may just be cursed (or epic failing), but even after getting the computer and installing a new 512 PCI card, Photoshop is still doing the strobe light thing. T_T

I’ll do some more tinkering and hope for the best. ^_^ (or just go Office Space on it, then invest in a set of oil paints X-D…I kid, I kid.)

Did you install Photoshop by itself? I’m wondering if there’s a game or other software that may be interacting with the video.

…. or a skin like Windows Blinds.

Was the new computer really new out of the box and free of all software?

I recently installed a new mouse. Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000. Since then, I’ve had this "flashing window" problem. Just a thought.

Curvemeister: Yup, I installed Photoshop alone, with only a handful of other programs I used before this all started.

John: The system came with Vista on it, but we slicked the hard drive and configured it for XP and installed it. (my brother is a comp. geek, so he was more than happy to have his "fun" with it) The strange thing is that we had the problem on both the old computer and the new one–with video cards ranging from my antiquated 64MB AGP to a 512MB AGP, to the 1GB PCI on the new system.

Q Photo: I have a MS Wireless Desktop 6000 (mouse and keyboard), but have not had any problems for the year and a half I’ve had it installed and working.

The strange thing is that we had the problem on both the old computer and the new one–

not strange at all. each "comp. geek," has his own utils/tweaks he likes to apply to make a system "just so". one of those tweaks may be your problem.

I have a MS Wireless Desktop 6000 (mouse and keyboard),

disable/remove the software for it and run straight vista supplied drivers. also if you have the aero interface off, turn it back on and see if that helps…
