Is there any easy way in Photoshop to convert an image of a spherical projection map from one projection to another? I’m doing some maps, and I want to convert the standard rectangular maps (like the ones you get on Google Maps or any similar applications) to the compressed projection that doesn’t, for example, show Greenland as being larger than Africa. The way they do it is to vertically compress everything the closer you get to the poles, so the image can’t be evenly distorted, it has to be more distorted based on its distance from the center. The Spherize filter with Vertical Only is the closest thing I can get, but it really doesn’t work well, Greenland still ends up huge, and everything in the middle ends up very vertically stretched. (Also, the lack of real-time preview on that filter makes it impossible to use effectively. You’ve got to try a setting, undo, try another, undo, etc. because you can’t see how it compares to other layers in the filter’s preview.) I’m thinking it might be possible with the Liquify tool, but it would take ages to line it up manually. Nearest I can figure is to slice the image into horizontal slices, and scale each down by increasing amounts towards the poles. Obviously, the more slices, the closer it will match, but that A.) is a lot of work, and B.) wouldn’t necessarily look that great as the seams might show. Anybody got any better ideas?
