I have recently purchased new HP laptop 320/4g/2.6, Windows Vista, and have an additional Samsung Monitor – T240 24" – I will be using Photoshop CS3, switching from Photoshop Elements6, and would like to know how I get Photoshop to recognize that I am using two monitors. I am also using Lightroom 2.0 and have no problem displaying a photo on the Samsung with it. What am I missing in Photoshop?

it’s windows that uses 2 monitors. should be auto-magic when you plug in the external. control panel> settings> display may help you to turn the external support on and off. once on, photoshop will see it automatically.

I thought so too – Lightroom does, but not Photoshop.

but not Photoshop.

something’s wrong. photoshop works fine with multiple monitors. drag palettes outside of the main window and place them on the second monitor, extend the app frame all the way across. open images on both monitors. etc.

If Photoshop is maximised, you can’t drag or stretch it – the app window – across both monitors. You can drag the palettes and the document/s to the second monitor.

If Photoshop is maximised, you can’t drag or stretch it

So "Restore" the window first, then do what Dave said.!

John…

That’s what i meant. Photoshop has to be in non-maimised (screen) mode to drage across multiple monitors.

Actually, come to that, i don’t think any programme can be dragged across two monitors if in maximised mode.

but everything can be dragged outside of the main photoshop frame. just drag out what you need and put it on the 2nd monitor. you don’t need to have the main photoshop frame stretch across 2 monitors to USE 2 monitors. (but you can stretch it if you want, and why would you want. there’s nothing but blank space that far over on the title bar and menu bar).

Here’s a nice trick: Put Photoshop main window on 2nd monitor. Drag image onto main monitor. Henceforth all images will open there, while all the tools and toolbars and palettes remain on the 2nd.

This is also a great opportunity to clean out the desktop.

And a nice benefit on Vista: Aero on image frame. No more sickly blue.

Check your video card drivers…

Also, a program called UltraMon can help you get a lot out of two monitors.. it allows one click switching between either monitor.. it will also allow you to stretch a programs area across both monitors.. as someone said before this isn’t that useful in Photoshop… you can drag your tool pallets and images outside the application area. It would maybe be more useful in Illustrator, as your workspace is limited to your application window (but not your tool pallets)..
