CS3 Extended, on Vista Ultimate,

Was working fine, then one day went to edit a file and got a message saying could not open due to program error.

I have reset preferences and turned version cue off, but still nothing works.

I have previewed the "flattened" image in brava, and in the open console of adobe, so i can see the file is there.

I have reinstalled adobe, but still nothing.

I have tried saving new images and opening them, but they will not!

HELP!!!!!! this has put a project on hold!

Do tiffs and jpegs open ok? Is it just File > Open, or Bridge/Explorer also?

Make sure the extension is the right one. Try to rename, including the .psd extension – or .tiff, as the case may be.

Another thing, a little off the top of my head, but since there are no other suggestions: I remember from the first release of CS3 that there were some modifications around, to enable custom install without all the components.

One caveat back then was to always include Version Cue Client (not Server), because File > Open would get errors without it.

As it happens, there is a Version Cue Client update available on Adobe’s download page. Running that should do no harm. I had to run it to fix a (unrelated) Bridge problem, that’s why I remember it.

Thanks for your input, problem is the files were working, then one day they suddenly stopped, for no reason that i can see!

So this won’t be the issue, as something has "broken" since installation and use.

James,

Of the above suggestions, which one(s) have you tried? Did none work for you?

Any new software or updates installed, since PS would Open PSD images?

I doubt anyone listens at all to the "reset the Preferences"-tip nowadays.

See the FAQ how this is done.

I made another user-account, and the you CAN open your files. But this is just a way, not a solution.

It is a diagnosis. It means the preferences in the original account are corrupted. (This happens.)

In the original account reset your preferences as described in the FAQ.

<http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1>

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.

This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

hey,
thanks, but it still doesn’t work…
I deleted the prefrences several times, but i still get this irritating message: could not open the file due to a program error…

still anybody have some help?

like I said..I made another user-account, and I can open the files from that account. But it’s much easier to open the files just from your normal account..and that still doesn’t work..

I reset prefrences many times..really hope someone knows the answer

Try tuning off any and all anti-virus controls. Disconnect from the internet first, if you are worried. Stop the firewall as well.
