I do not see any way to reset my preferences. None of them look out of wack.

Please be more specific.
Thanks

Otherwise, you might need to reset your brush tool. Also in the FAQ.

Thanks for the replies:

I tried the shift, ctrl & alt keys on start up of PS2 and received a msg fm windows Vista about the PS short cut. I said OK and nothing happened.

I started PS2 and then held the shift, ctrl & alt keys while it was starting. This seemed to reset some things because the original message that comes with PS came up. But the mask problem is still there.

I went further in your instructions and found the "reset all tools". Did that. Still have the problem with my mask not clearing totally.

Any more suggestions???? Thanks, Al

How are you choosing the "Black" for the mask? Are you using the default black (R-0,G-0,B-0)? Or are you using 100% K from CMYK?

that’s not right. you should get a message from photoshop asking if you want to reset your preferences.

outline of maybe 1 to 3%

Can you be more specific on the outline? Is it the brush outline or the mask outline, does it go down a bit when you go over it, do you have a selection active perhaps?

I think the best way is for you to upload a screen grab of the entire photoshop window with layers, brushes, and the color palletes open. Have the color selected that you are using. You may want to include what color mode you are in as well.

Charles: I am using the black for the mask. I make sure the black and white are in the bin.

Mathias: There is a total faint image left (if you mask on to a blank area), not just an outline. It reaches a point where no matter how many times you go over it, it does not go away.

SukjriisterL I will work on that. I work in RGB.

Thanks to all, Al

How?
Hit the D key then the X key before painting in the mask.

If you still have the problem, as has been said, reset your preferences, or at least reset your Brush Palette.

Charles:
Thanks, but I do hit "D" key and paint with black. I have reset all the tools, including the brush. I know the brush got reset because it reset to the smallest size.

Al,
When you target the mask, what does the Info Palette indicate the black color is? With the mask targeted, does adjusting Levels affect how it works?
If you select an area and fill with black on the layer mask, (i.e. don’t use a brush) do you still see the problem?

Thanks to all:

I found I was having the same problem using the eraser or the brush. Also there seemed to be a few other problems. No Edit/Warp (pgm would freeze. When scrolling holding down the space bar the screen would bunch up and become unusable.

To make a long story short, I have reinstalled Photoshop PS2 and it seems to be working OK.

Thanks again, Al
