i am trying to learn how to paint in photoshop using a wacom tablet. i have been fiddling around a bit but haven’t gone farther than dodge/burn and a some blurring an smudging. i am using the brushes with moderation because i’m unsure of a lot a techniques.

does anyone know of a good book from which to learn painting techniques (creation of elements like rain, making textures, making snow, fog, lighting, reflections, shadows etc). skills have to be developed through practice i’m sure, but i could use a good book to guide me along.

any recommendations?

Thank you.

Go to the library and check out several books on airbrush technique. Skip all the chapters on maintaining and cleaning your equipment. Instead of rubylith or frisket, use quickmask.

It’s a little more complicated than that. That’s a good idea, but before you can do that, you need to make the leap of faith from the physical world to the digital– each have their own limitations, but they are very different.

Try Photorealistic Techniques for Photoshop and Illustrator, Commercial Photoshop and Photoshop Studio, all Bert Monroy
Photoshop Artistry, Haynes and Crumpler and there’s another Crumpler book, but I forget the title right now. (Check Amazon)
How to Cheat with Photoshop, Caplin
And there’s one that does Photoshop, Illustrator and Painter side by side that is pretty good.
Colin Smith has some good stuff on his CD, too.
