I know it must be something obvious, but can anyone resolve my problem. Here is a (very poor quality ultra-compressed) screenshot of my desktop and PS CS3 with a screengrab of the same desktop (obviously!).

What has happened to the colours in PS? The screengrab looks fine in other apps and Windows Photo gallery.
Help!!!
Thanks
Iain

That’s what it will look like when you "assign" ProPhoto to an sRGB or untagged image. Go to Edit > Assign Profile > sRGB and it should look OK.

Check your color management settings. It seems you either have color management off, or ProPhoto set as your working space, otherwise there would have been a little asterisk next to (RGB/8 ) on the image title bar, like this: (RGB/8*). That asterisk means the image has a profile not the same as your working space.

In general, you use "Convert to Profile" when you need to go from one profile to another. "Assign profile" is only used in very special circumstances.

Photoshop is color managed (yes, even if you turn it "off"), but other apps are not. That’s why it looks OK outside PS.

Freeagent, thanks a lot. You were right, I did recently change to Prophoto as my working space and that was the problem.
That was a VERY helpful reply. I thought I did know something about CM but your post, and especially the link you posted, showed me that I had a lot to learn.
Thanks again.

That’s great 🙂

Actually, that was a very useful introduction to color management right there. It’s very confusing at first, until suddenly one day it all falls nicely into place. Just keep at it.
