Gaussian Blur, pls help!

Dear all,

I wanna learn how to make this kind of pic where the bkgrd is blurry but focus on the main object.

I have tried using photoshop 7.0 but I juz couldnt’ do a do good job, blending the main object to the blurred bkgrd is to hard for me.

Could someone expert teach me the steps to do a good pic.

There is no magic as far as I am aware. That means that you need to isolate the dog with a selection. There are several ways to do this. One suggestion is to duplicate the image, use the extract filter, clean up the dog, put it on top of the original, then blur the background of the original.

Another way is to use the pen tool to select the dog, invert the selection and blur; yet another way is to use Quick Mask (Q) and paint your selection of the dog; then, of course, invert selection and blur.
