Graduated screens not uniform in color

I have made a foreground to background linear graduated screen in PS6 / windows xp and although the color selector shows black, foreground shows black, and background shows white, I get an almost rainbow like assortment of various color bands across the page. I have made the screen with the rectangle tool and also with a new fill layer and get the same results. I try to change the color… red, green, pink just to see what happens, but nothing changes. It also prints the same way. I put a second new fill layer with a pattern fill to hide the effect, but the page still has faint bands of the wrong color running across it. Any ideas on this issue?

Can you repeat this with a new 8-bit RGB image?

Try calibrating your monitor and checking your video card (under Display > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot turn down hardware acceleration.

If that doesn’t help, Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.

This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

Indeed. Sounds more like merely an issue with how the gradient is displayed on your monitor and then printed wrongly based on that settings. Some calibration/ resetting of any color tweaks in the system might do wonders.

Do you have color management enabled, and is your RGB profile one of the standard ones (sRGB, Adobe RGB, or similar)?
