Will my 32bit CS3 plug-ins (Neat Image, etc) work with CS4? Also, will CS3 actions and scripts work in CS4?

Who here can answer that before the program is released for sale?

For plug-ins you could check the manufacturers’ sites.

Pretty sure ALL plug-ins to run in 64 bit Photoshop will also have to be 64 bit to load…

I’ve checked with a couple of companies and both answered that they will need to re-write for CS4-64 but both said they would start coding for CS4-64 as soon as they got their hands on the CS4 SDK. I didn’t ask about the 32-bit version.

A third company–one that Jeff knows very well–simply answered with:

"If Photoshop runs, we run."

Soooo….. PK Sharpener? Not really a plug-in, I know, but what are PixelGenius’ intentions? It seems like more and more of Sharpener is being incorporated into ACR/Lightroom, at least for capture sharpening. But I find PKS incredibly useful for output, so I’m wondering about compatibility with 64 bit.

Thanks,

Rick

Edit — Checked the PG site, but didn’t actually ask anybody. Thanks CR.

PG will have CS4 compatible updates (Universal Binaries for Mac, 32/64 bit executables for Win)…we’re also working on PhotoKit 2.0 as well as PhotoKit Sharpener 2.0 due a bit later after CS4 ships. And, we’ve had the beta SDK for a while now.

And yes, PhotoKit plug-in ARE plug-ins…just not "filters".

To alleviate the confusion in this thread and spell it out clearly: No, 32bit plugins will not run in 64bit PS CS4. Not as emulation, nor otherwise. They all have to be recompiled specifically, so pester the plugin devs to provide compatible versions as quickly as they can.

Given that the CS4 SDK isn’t yet available… this developer would love to know the quickest way to get there.

Are you a member of the Photoshop CS4 beta? The beta SDK has been available for developers for quite a while I believe…

No I am not. Starting at v7, Adobe has continually raised the exclusionary bar beyond what is feasible for independent, small developers to cope with. It’s hard enough to get hold of the CS3 SDK, let alone participate in some SUPA SEKRIT beta program.

I for one would not/could not do without a number of my plug-ins. Will one be able to install CS4 in 32 OR 64 bit versions? or is it 64 bit period?

If you are a legitimate developer, I don’t see HOW you could possibly do business without taking the steps to be able to access the tools you need to develop against in a timely manner. Otherwise you’ll just have to wait until Adobe makes the CS4 SDK available…

Will one be able to install CS4 in 32 OR 64 bit versions? or is it 64 bit period?

You can choose which executable to install…you may be able to install both (although I’ve not done this myself).

On 64bit systems, both versions will always be installed. It’s not possible to install only the 32bit version, you always get 64bit PS along, even if you never intend to use it…

If you are a legitimate developer,

that’s insulting jeff (yea, i should talk. :)) toby’s a respected member of this community for many years. his ico format plugin and psd repair util have helped many many users over the years. and he’s always around and responsive when an issue pops up.

and he’s always around and responsive when an issue pops up.

Then he should discover how to join the Adobe Solutions Network and get access to the development program. Adobe can’t go out and scour the bushes to find people to invite (although they try). It’s up to the developer to come to Adobe to get help. And, while Adobe DID require people to join ASN for a fee to get the CS2 SDK, that was changed for CS3 (and will be the same for CS4 as far as I know). And yes, to get the beta SDK one DOES have to sign an NDA…DOH!

So, one can sit on the sidelines and piss&moanΒ™ about lack of access to the SDK or, if one is a "legitimate" (meaning somebody or company that is doing this for a living and NEEDS the SDK for a product that compliments Photoshop), then it’s THEIR responsibility to go out and find out what they need to do to get the SDK that they need. Posting in a public forum about not being able to get the SDK isn’t the way a "legitimate" developer would go about trying to get the info they need.

Thanks for the fleeting defence dave.

I’ll stand by my remark. Adobe does not encourage non-commercial contributors to the Photoshop platform. Users will suffer.

As for legitimacy meaning "somebody or company that is doing this for a living and NEEDS the SDK for a product that compliments Photoshop", that is out of touch with reality, outrageously offensive, and includes a misspelling. If jeff and his Almighty Buck are trying to curry ideological favour with those factions at Adobe dedicated to keeping the platform closed, I wish him the best of luck; I cannot imagine any other reason why he would so profoundly insult developers outside Adobe.

Either Adobe and the community want non-commercial (free, open source) development to add to the platform, or they don’t.

I’m sure Adobe does…but if you want access to the as yet, unreleased CS4 SDK, you’ll need to sign and DNA and make a formal effort to get it…once CS4 is released and the SDK is not longer beta, it’ll be released through the ASN, where while you have to sign and NDA, you don’t have to pay money to get it. Not sure where the difficulty comes in, unless you are unwilling to sign an industry standard NDAΒ–heck there’s proprietary information in the SDKs and Adobe ain’t gonna just release it to the general public…they quit doing that back in the Photoshop 6 days I think…

fleeting but heart-felt. πŸ™‚ i don’t use your apps, but as a developer i can appreciate the time and dedication it took/takes to create them and maintain them.
