The Artistic Filters Colored Pencil, Cutout, and Dry Brush dialogs do not open when selected. The other Artistic filters all work normally. Also, once any working Artistic filter dialog is opened, I can select the Colored Pencil, Cutout, or Dry Brush effect from the thumbnails and they work.

I’m using Photoshop CS3 on a PC with Windows XP and SP3

I have restarted Photoshop and have also reset Preferences, but the problem remains.

Thanks in advance

Some filters will only work in a limited number of modes, for example 8bit RGB.

John,

But in that case the Artistic Filters would all be grayed out in the Filters menu, no?

Skip,

Are the filters grayed out? Or do they just not come up in the dialog?

Does it happen with every file? There may be a lag with very large files.

I’m just a taking shots in the dark as well.

Thanks for the feedback.

The filters are not grayed out.

All files are 8bit RGB

I tried various files (JPG, TIF, PSD) and various file sizes. Unfortunately the problem occurs in all cases.

Sorry Ed, didn’t answer all your questions.

When you click the filter, nothing happens. The dialog does not come up.

Hmmm. Puzzling.

If Trashing Preferences didn’t work (try it again to make sure) maybe reinstalling would help.

Many people think they have reset the preferences when they haven’t.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.

Hi John

When I used the Alt, Ctrl, Shift method I got the message that says do you want to reset the Adobe Photoshop settings file, and I said Yes.

Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks

Nope. That would have done it OK.

I can’t think of anything else offhand.

are these the filters that ONLY show up in the filter browser? i don’t htink you CAN access all of them individually anymore… they all open in the filter gallery.

Hi Dave

The filters in question have always showed up and worked (until recently) when you select Filter/Artistic from the drop-down menu.

In the Filter Gallery everything works, including the three filters in question.

Question on re-installing – Do I need to uninstall CS3 first, or can you just install on top of existing program?

Thanks

A twist to the tale.

I was working on a picture with onOne PhotoTools (I installed onOne Plugin Suite 4 a couple of months ago. Could be about the same time the current problem started) and after applying the effect I tried Filter/Artistic. With both the Colored Pencil and Cutout, when it was selected the onOne FocalPoint plugin ran. When I tried Dry Brush the onOne Batch plugin started. All filters still work in Filter Gallery.

I’m going to stop the onOne plugins from loading and see if this has any effect.

The problem went away!!!!

Now I need to try and isolate just which onOne plugin is causing the problem so I can get with onOne for a fix, hopefully.

Will update when I know more.

Thanks for everyone’s help.

It would appear that the problem is in the "onOne Library.acel.8bx" file located in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plugins folder. This file loads an onOne drop down menu in the Main Menu (File, Edit, etc). Without this file loading, access to all of the onOne plugins is not possible, but all the Filter/Artistic effects work normally.

Time for a visit to onOne Tech Support.

Thanks again to all who responded.
