Wacom style device; any thoughts on which are good?

I am an amateur who uses CS2 for my own purposes, chopping images fiddling with them for my own websites. I am definetly no expert at PS.

The thing is I find the mouse a real pain to use when it comes to using pen or lasso tools, etc. I recently wondered about buying some kind of Wacom style pad and pen, as I think that might be a more intuitive input method, but am not sure how suitable they would be for an amateur like me.

Any thoughts on decent models for this type of user (I can’t justify a fortune for this), how easy are they to learn to use, etc.

Running XP, DW8 and CS2.

You won’t be too disappointed with a variety of Wacom choices. If you are using a laptop, you might find a the smaller versions more applicable. If you want "higher fidelity" with your PS tools, the larger the board, the better. I currently use the Intuos3 9×12, but I believe for what I use it for, I could have settled for 6×11 or 6×8.

Wacom sells cheaper versions of their drawing boards. I believe the Graphire is still available via 3rd parties but has been replaced by the Bamboo. The biggest difference I’ve seen is the Intuos3 comes with short cut keys which are missing from the downscaled versions.

No the biggest difference is pressure sensitivity. You will find that the Intuos records more subtle pressure, and feels more natural like a real drawing implement. But its not really any use to anyone without some kind of drawing background or experience.

I’ve seen many web designers and graphic designers using Intuos tablets who have no real use for them – for this kind of thing, or avoiding RSI, the Bamboo or Graphire models will do just fine.
