Why scrubby sliders?

I have often wondered why there are scrubby sliders as well as the regular controls in Photoshop and other Adobe products. Obviously I must be missing something; but to my eye, this appears to be feature redundancy.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me?

Regards: Anthony.

In many cases they are much quicker than typing in numbers or finding the slider,

And they are interactive!

Scrubby sliders do well with Fitts’ Law. They’re a larger target. And to alter a setting is also easier: once you click, you don’t need to aim the cursor anywhere to, just drag.

I certainly miss them when I’m in InDesign. I keep trying to scrub.

Must we wait for CS5, or good news?

Yes its also a real pity that certain of the older tools, Selective Color for example, were never updated with scrubbies.

One thing you may not know – if you hold down SHIFT while using a scrubby slider it goes faster, if you hold down option it goes slower. This is extremely useful with certain tools, like Free Transform, where pinpoint accuracy is required and you don’t want to type values in.

Speed.

I saw them demo-ed at an Adobe Roadshow and thought "what’s wrong with the regular controls"?

Then I tried using scrubbies in my daily workflow and never stopped.

Amazing what difference one less mouseclick can make, esp if you’re working quickly.

There are also the "Secret Scrubbies".

If you you double click a number in a value input box, press Ctrl and the mouse will scrub!

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I use the scrubbies myself and did know about the SHIFT thing (but thanks for mentioning it).

My thoughts were more along the lines of why there are two, similar methods for doing the same thing?

Anyway… thanks again

Anthony.

Son of a gun. Great tip.
I don’t know if it a Mac thing… but I don’t have to click or double click on the input box. Just mouse over, press Command (Control for y’all) and scrub.

Does this mean the zooming feature in CS4 isn’t "new"? 😉
