Just bought Photoshop 7.0.1 and only have one problem (besides the learning curve). I really like the crop tool that lets you predefine the size of the image. Could make a nice even border around the print…IF I COULD GET THE IMAGE TO CENTER ON THE PAGE!!!!!!!!!!!

When I choose center on page to print a photo the image is shifted to the left. It’s not very noticeable when printing on 4" by 6" but on a 8.5" by 11" it really is. I’ve played with every setting and can’t get it to work.

An example…I crop a photo to 8" by 10.5" which should give a 1/4 inch border but I get the photo centered top and bottom and a 1/8" left and 3/8" right borders. I also get a warning "Image is larger than the Papers printable area; some clipping will occur." but the print comes out 8" by 10.5".

OK, so I think I can get around it by choosing the edges manually. I put in .25 top and .25 left. This time the image is reduced to 7 3/4" by 10 3/8" and the only 1/4" border is the bottom edge. Now I’m really banging my head on the keyboard!

The printer is a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 970cse. I’ve tried Photoshop under Windows XP and W2K with the same results.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, John

You should start by reading all the similar topics that already have answers.

Photoshop centers the image in the printable area for your printer. It’s up to your printer (or driver) manufacturer to center the printable area (they don’t even tell applications that it isn’t truly centered).

You aren’t doing anything wrong, but your printer driver is.

Expanding on Chris’s reply – most inkjet printers have a larger trailing edge margin to allow the paper pushers to work without messing up the ink. For example, my Epson 1290 has around 10mm margins on three sides, and around 20mm on the trailing edge. To get centered output, I have to size the image smaller than the printable area (ie, make all the margins the same size as the trailing edge), and then tell the printer driver to center the image on the page.

Your printer manual should provide you with information on the printable area, and what each margin is.
