Is it a BUG when Photoshop CS3 can’t count?

Open any PSD file, add a few vertical guides, using the selection tool select the entire image to get the total width, then use the selection tool to select individual cells within the grid lines and add the horizontal values. Both values (all vertical grids’ horizontal values added and the single width of the image) should be equal, but they are not.

It seems that PS CS3 is adding a pixel of width to each vertical selection.

You can view a flash video of the problem at < http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=e9fcfa3d5acb8293ab1eab3e9 fa335ca4e4862f5fe4a1fa2> .

I ran across this while trying to learn to create a mock-up of a webpage in PS and transfer it to Dreamweaver CS3 using CSS for the formating.

Unfortunately, PS CS3 can’t add. I can work around it by subtracting 1 pixel from the width of all vertical segments except the final one, but shouldn’t PS CS3 know how to count?

This has been confirmed as a bug with Adobe technical support. There is no time frame for a fix or even a confirmation that it will be fixed since CS4 is hitting the streets.

I do not CS4 to test yet for this bug.

Adding insanity to insult……

I thought I had found a way around the bug…I’d simply slice up the image along the guides and use the slice widths.

But, as insane as this is, when you click on a slice with the select tool, PS CS3 doesn’t show ANY height or width info in the Info palette.

WTH is that about? You can only select a slice with the slice selection tool, so no other option there….

Wow…at first it can’t count, and now it REFUSES to even try.

LOL…….

Fireworks CS3 gets the widths right. Maybe Photoshop can learn a thing or 2 from little brother…..

It’s working as designed. If a guide is located within a pixel, the same pixel will be included in adjacent snap-to selections. If the guide is located precisely between pixels, the off by one problem that you describe goes away.

I don’t have Fireworks available to double check, but my guess is that its guides do not support sub-pixel placement.

So, how do you place a guide "precisely between pixels"? Ther’s nothing to click on between pixels.

As far as PS CS3 "working as designed" – the Adobe rep that said it was a bug begs to differ with you on that.

Well, I’ll be a eunuch in a whorehouse! The simple solution is to hold down shift while you drag out your guides.

It’d still be nice to see the height and width info in the info palette when you select a slice with the slice selection tool.

LOL.

Re slice dimensions, you can actually see them in the info palette if you drag one of the edges of the slice over and back one pixel. Would be nice to just have them there without having to drag though

Another way to see the sizes is to select either slice tool, right click on the slice and select Edit Slice Options, and you’ll find the dimensions.

Or you can select the slice with the marquee and look at the dimensions in the info palette.
