I’ve searched for this topic and have found similar results, but none of the solutions have worked for my issue.

All of a sudden, a few days ago, when I clicked on "Save for Web" I received this error.

"Could not complete the Export command because of a program error."

This used to work fine before a few days ago. I haven’t made any changes to my computer. I’ve deleted the Save for Web prefrences file as well as the Photoshop preference file. None of these have helped. I am still unable to Save for Web.

Any other ideas?

What have you tried so far? The infamous "1 pixel slice" problem perhaps? Temporary directory full? File permissions?

Thanks for the reply. I tried deleting the Save for Web preferences file as well as the Photoshop preferences file. None of which helped.
I don’t have slices turned on.
How do I check my temporary directory?
This happens with all files so I’m sure it’s not a permissions problem.

I have no idea if it is related, but I had general "save" errors for the last months until I found solution on that forum

In short: Microsoft Office 2007 – Groove aplication creates a conflict with Photoshop CS3. just uninstall Groove and off you go, all is working perfectly.

Hope that helps.

Thanks but I don’t have Office 2007 nor Photoshop CS3.

Your user temp directory is under C:\Documents and Settings\Tara\Local Settings\Temp. Also look through your preset directories for "Optimized Settings". Maybe one of them is damaged and affects your save for web in strange ways.

I’ve now upgraded to CS3 and am getting the same error when saving for web.

I took a screenshot. You can see the error here:

Ok, so in trying to troubleshoot this issue, I created a new user account in Windows Vista. After logging into the new account, I opened Photoshop CS3, and tried to save for web and it works!

So can anyone tell me what that means exactly? And what do I have to do to make Photoshop work correctly in my old user account? Do I have to start using this new account?

It means the save for web preferences in the first account are corrupt (all preferences are user-specific and stored in separate folders on the system drive).

If you log back into the original account you can reset them. The FAQ says "The Save for Web preferences can be deleted by holding down CTRL+ALT whilst selecting ‘Save For Web’ in the File Menu".

I guess that should work for Vista too.

(Those FAQs are pretty ancient!)

When I hold down CTRL+ALT and click Save For Web, I just get the same error.

In addition, Illustrator won’t start up correctly in my old user account, but works fine in the newly created account.

You can manually delete the folder. It is called "Adobe Save For Web 10.0 Prefs". It’s in AppData but the path I have is for Vista64 which won’t help.

Thanks. I managed to delete the Prefs folder as well as my Illustrator prefs folder. Still both programs are still returning errors. I think I may have to switch my user accounts 🙁
