BIG files opening slow

Working with big files…1.5 gig that have 30 to 50 layers and many FX on them.

They are taking a LONG time to open.
In considering updating to a new CPU soon….what affects this problem the most…

CPU
Video card and its amount of RAM
System RAM
Something I am not thinking about?

And, with the best hardware available, a network printer as default can slow Photoshop’s File Open and File New to a crawl.

4 – 20mins load times for a 2 – 10gb file is about right, I think….well, it is on my workstation.

Right now its taking 5-15 min to open one of these files. Photoshop CS3 is what we are using right now.
We are using Win XP PRO, but new machines would mostlikely be Vista 64bit.

I didt mention specs of the current machine as we are looking into getting new ones. I was more concerned about what factors actually affect the opening of a big file, so we may adjust for this when we order the new machines.

John Joslin- Ahh now that’s interesting, as we are all connected to network printers.

A new CPU or more memory probably isn’t going to help a lot. You have a very large file that has to be read in to the program, Photoshop has to display not only a large file but render out the fx, etc. If you expect this kind of file to open in 3 seconds your expectations are not realisitic.

You’ve given us no details about your system, what version of Photoshop or Windows. And you’ve give us no indication of what you definition of slow is.

we are all connected to network printers.

This bug and has been reported many times in the forum.

The solution is to make a generic printer driver your default printer. If you don’t have one, download it here:
