PS scratch disk on separate but slower hard disk?

Hi,

I’m just reconfiguring a couple of PCs and it occurred to me that I have an older 10GB hard disk spare. If I install this in a PC, with a more modern disk as it’s primary drive, just for the PS scratch disk space would I get any benefit?

Disk 1 – 7200rpm 8MB cache 250GB
Disk 2 – 5400rpm 2MB cache 10GB

The point being, is it better for the scratch disk space to be on the ‘system’ disk, which is faster but also used for Windows spool space etc, or on a separate disk which is a bit slower?

In real world terms the difference will be negligible either way. PS performance is maximized with RAM (unload unnecessary background apps and processes and allot PS the max) and the fastest CPU you can afford with the most cache (currently Intel Quad cores).
Any use of a hard drive is orders of magnitude slower than RAM. It will be interesting to see if CS4 is truly multi-threaded and, more revolutionary, taps the parallel processing power of a 3d gpu.

Ok, thanks. My main machine is a quad-core with a lot of RAM. Just thinking about best config. for a secondary PC. I might put it in and see how it performs.
