Toolbars disappeared!

Hi, I’m trying to use Photoshop version 6.0, which I’ve had for awhile and never really used much before. At some point, I closed every single toolbar. I’ve managed to get most of them back (colors, history, layers, navigator) but now I have a new problem. I can’t find any toolbar that will let me switch tools! That means I can’t use airbrush or lasso, or anything like that. Does anyone know how to bring back that other toolbar? I’ve tried going through various menu commands, and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sarah Nuss

Yup, I’ve tried that. The toolbars that command brings back aren’t the ones I need at this point. I remember (before I got rid of every toolbar) that there was one that let me switch tools, and that I could actually use the airbrush and such. That’s the one I can’t seem to bring back. Thanks anyway! Any other ideas?

Sarah,

On my system (windows) the tab key displays or hides the tool bar menu. If you’re MAC, I’m sure there is a similiar one key deal.

Thanks for the help – unfortunately, that command only displays the toolbars already activated. I still need to figure out how to activate the other toolbar that lets me switch tools! Thanks anyway, though. Next time, I’ll use the tab key to hide the toolbars rather than just closing them all!

Sarah,

Photoshop has no toolbars per se, unless you’re using the Extensis Phototools plug-in with Photobars, which I don’t think you are given your reference to the airbrush and such.

What you’re looking for is the Toolbox, which might be minimized but should be restored to normal placement in the workspace if you select Resette Palette Locations from the Window menu. Now, as for switching tools, you may just be needing to hold the mouse over a given tool long enough for the tool icon to expand out for selection of another related tool. Or, just right-click on the tool instead and you’ll get the extended choices immediately.

Regards,

Daryl

Daryl, You’re right, I used the term "tool bar menu" cuz that’s what Sarah called it. My terminology would be the "doo-hickey" on the left that shows all the different tools—(that I should have referred to as the "toolbox.")

I’m confused now, and probably shouldn’t have attempted an answer. Either my toolbox shows up or doesn’t. To select other tools that have an "expanded drawer" indicated by the black sideways triangle, I put the cursor on that and the drawer opens.

Sorry, Sarah–I guess I didn’t understand your question.

Whoops!

Do you have a small rectangle with a blue top bar and below it an eye in gray color on your top left side of screen below your menu bar? If you do, try double clicking on the blue bar and your tool box should return.

Sarah, have you gone to Windows and made sure that Tools is checked?

I know, it’s a weird question! It’s sorta as if I closed only the tool box/bar that lets me switch tools, except the normal solutions to that aren’t working now. I would just re-install, but I can’t find the cd anywhere, so I’d have to buy it again for $600 or whatever it costs now. Well thanks for the ideas anyway- if I ever fix this current problem, I’ll at least know some different ways to hide/show tool boxes!

Thanks for the help,
Sarah

Sarah,

Can you do a screen capture and post a link so that we can see exactly what you are seeing?

As Daryl points out, there isn’t a toolbar. So for the sake of clarity, let’s define exactly what is missing. If it is the strip that allows you to choose tool, that would be the Tools Pallet. This is the pallet that allows you to pick a paintbrush or an eraser tool, for example. Is this what is missing?

If it is, resetting pallets should display it. Look on the left hand side of your photoshop work area. Is there a blue rectangle with the picture of the Adobe "Eye" logo? If so, double click that blue rectangle.

If this isn’t what you mean, then you will have to be more specific. If all else fails, reset your preferences per the procedure in the faq and you will have joy.

So, Tony—do you have a problem with me calling the "toolbox" on the left the "doo-hickey" that has all the tools?!? (kidding, of course)

Actually this is new info for me, so all discussions are educational–I checked the "handy dandy manual" which refers to the tool strip on the left as the "toolbox"–but here’s the new one for me—on the menu bar across the top, on the left hand side where you see the display for the tool you are using—that is called the tool options bar and it talks about moving it any where you want and docking it at the top or bottom of the screen—maybe that’s what Sarah is referring to.

So, you’re right more info needed—and I don’t think they call it the "tools palette". ๐Ÿ™‚

To display the tool options bar:
Do one of the following:
ยท Choose Window > Options.
ยท Click a tool in the toolbox.

Lasso options bar
To return a tool or all tools to the default settings:
Do one of the following:
ยท Click the tool icon on the options bar, then choose Reset Tool or Reset All Tools from the context menu.
ยท (ImageReady) In Windows or Mac OS 9.x, choose Edit > Preferences > General, then click Reset All Tools.
ยท (ImageReady) In Mac OS X, choose ImageReady > Preferences > General, then click Reset All Tools.
To move the options bar:
Drag the options bar by the gripper bar at its left edge.

Patty

Well *I* call it a doo-hickey <grin>.

Don’t make me blush Patty – I’m 40 pounds overweight and having some trouble coping… but it was a nice thing to say, thank you.

Tony,

I don’t look at you as being "overweight"—I view it as more "snuggle area"–but hey, not important what I think—you gotta love who YOU are…
