Color Range. "Having a Friday thing today"

What am I overlooking, those of you who’ve had your coffee? My (Select)> Color Range is greyed-out and I can’t bring it up. Never before. ??

The only way I get it to gray out (in a quick test) is to set the image to 32-bit.

I was in 8 bit.
Strangely, I reopened it (a tiff) as a jpg
and it WOULD work, then. Ehh?
