After an apparent successful install of Photoshop CS4, both with a valid serial number and as a trial, PS crashes at the blue splash screen with "encountered error and needs to close", and just shuts down.

My system is a Core2Quad, 9550, running Vista Ultimate 64, 8 gb ram, with a ATI 4850 512 MB card. This is a virgin computer built for Lightroom 2 (which runs like hell on the machine) and PS, with NO other apps running except virus protection. (AVS? that came with the mother board.)

I have tried every single suggestion in the support files, all of the MB, Vista, and ATI drivers updated, talked to support for one hour, and still no resolution. I do know that it generates the GPUInitfail file, but does still not launch or get any further after it generates that file. I have cleared temp, prefetch, re-installed several times and still nothing.

I am at a loss as to what to do next. Has anyone else had this same problem, and how did you resolve it?

What motherboard are you using? I had a lot of trouble (blue screens) running CS4 w/8G RAM with Vista64 on an Intel 975 chipset board (D975XBX2Z)and ended up dumping it for an x38 chipset board (Asus P5E WS-Pro) for it to run stable.

DP45SG with P45 chipset. The blue screen is the PS startup screen; as soon as it shows, I get the error.

Hmm, that could be a bad driver, or could potentially be a corrupt file (font, profile, DLL, etc.).

Check your disk for damage first.
Check for updated printer and video card drivers.
Then you may need to reinstall Photoshop.
If that doesn’t solve it, you may have a corrupt system DLL.

How ’bout loading up the 32bit version?
Does that version load?
[In the "Program Files (x86)" folder.]

Have you updated to the latest MB bios version(0083)?

Have you installed Windows Vista Service Pack 1?

Have you updated to the most recent video card driver?

… Just scratching my head to think of anything that might help 🙂

Why did you install it as a trial as well?

Thanks to everyone who has posted. Russell, just like you, I am scratching my head just trying to come up with anything.

All of the drivers, including video card and MB, are the current versions. Service Pack 1 was already installed with the computer; I just got the computer about 2 weeks ago. Video drivers 10/15/08 and H.86A.0083 on the MB drivers (checked in registry).

I have reinstalled PS several times to no avail. After the last install I did a clean uninstall using their program, reinstalled, and had the same error.

Tried launching 32 bit version; same error. Even tried the disallow open gl windows program, and it did not fix the problem.

When I first downloaded the program, I installed after entering my CS3 code, and on very first launch it gave me the error. I thought it might be a problem because CS3 is not installed on the machine, so tried to install as a trial instead. But the same error popped up for both, so the error has been there since the very first install. As of now, I do not have any PS installed, and am only using LR2. At this point I will probably just install CS3, and give CS4 a chance to issue a fix, but given that I am not sure of the problem, I’m not sure how long that will take.

What AV software are you running?

I’m running a very similar PC setup to you, James… the only difference seems to be the video card (I have an nVidia 8800GTX).

I can get into CS4 without problems, but little by little the layers refuse to update, and finally the program crashes. Fortunately the 32-bit version seems to work well.

I wonder where we go next for advice?

I have had recent problems with CS3 and my anti-virus program (Panda). I fixed it by disabling some of the features, leaving AV and the firewall intact. Why it suddenly started giving problems is a mystery even Panda refuses to address, but it did fix the problem.

would start by pulling the internet connection and then disabling the entire AV, firewall and any spyware, then trying it again.
