just upgraded from photoshop CS3 to CS4. The installation went fine, except a the end, an error message was in the additional info box, saying: Adobe Photoshop CS4 English Language Pack
Error:
Error 2.

LangPack (English) for DeviceCentral
Error:
I tried running pshop and i got a message "miising components" and it wouldnt start. Tech support in India told me to uninstall CS3 and CS4, stop all startup items in msconfig, reboot and reinstall.
I got the same message. Tech support said they’d get back to me Monday, since there was no "official" tech support on the weekends. BTW, i was on with them for 4 hours.
Anyone have any suggestions. I noticed that even though i uninstalled pshop, bridge CS3 is still functioning.
Thanks
hal

Follow up: unuinstalled all adobe products using wincs3clean and disabled all startup items in msconfig and then rebooted. I reinstalled CS4 again and got the same messages.
I have 15 gB free on C drive, 3.2 gB memory, XP Pro.

Fortunately, i had ghosted the PC last week, so now I’m back to using CS3. Help!

Did you take a peek at the installer log (Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Installers/*.log.gz)? If you do, you should see an entry marked with "Failure" for the language pack with a more detailed description of what may be wrong (locked file, locked installer package, verification failed etc.) or an exit code. Even if you cannot make sense of it on your own, it may provide some more clues to the support peeps.

Hal , after uninstalling CS3 and running CS3 cleanup script and before installing CS4 did u ran CS4 cleanscript ?

You can get cleanup script from this link :

<http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html>

I think that should help.

Managed to find a way round this error. ( I had the same thing and it drove me nuts). I noticed the installation failed right near the end. i tried installing it on windows xp 32-bit, it went fine, i then copied the installation folder from xp to the vista one and it worked. It was just missing the files.

What i want to know is why it did not install properly on vista in the first place…

Hope this helped

Since my last post, I spent another 4 hours on the phone, this time with the top level supervisor in India, with no improvement.
Now, they are promising to have a US high level guy call within 48 hours (it’s already 38 hours…). This has gone on 6 days.
Here’s what did with technical support.
<http://www.adobe.com/support/creativesuite/>

1. Removed cs4 with cleanup tool
2. Ran CS3 cleanup tool at al levels (1-4)
3. Edited registry to remove all adobe and Photoshop entries
4. Rebooted
5. Reinstalled
6. Still found old serial number
7. Reinstalled with same error message
8. Ran AIR- no information.
I’ll post anything I learn.

I noticed when installing the Master Collection, the apps would install in about 2 minutes, but it would take 7-10 mins for the language pack to install. Have asked why, but no one seems to know.

Problem Solved:
I finally spoke to a US tech guy.
He acknowledged I had tried all the simple and radical fixes, so he suggested I upgrade to XP service pack 3 and also to download the CS4 extended again. I did both.
I used Beyond Compare to do a CRC comparison between the old and new Software which found no differences.
I restored my Ghost backup of C: from just before I had removed all the adobe programs, so the PC was back to the original setup before I had the installation problems.
Then I installed SP3, which went well and ghosted the PC again. Then, just to increase the odds of a successful installation, I did an alt-ctrl-del and went to the processes tab and killed anything which seemed unnecessary (things I recognized, like anti-virus, Norton, update managers, etc).
Finally, I installed from the new download of CS4 extended. It worked!!!!!!!
Hope this helps anyone with similar problems.

I had all kinds of problems installing CS4 too – ran the different scripts and all. I am using Vista and it seems like having the SP1 is very important.
Even if I am on auto windows update my computer didn’t say I had SP1, so I downloaded the whole thing and installed it (took an hour with several reboots).
Now everything works much much faster – it is like having a new computer again. CS4 runs very fast except for mysterious lags here and there.. color proofing is my biggest problem at the moment with the OpenGL turned on. Haven’t been able to fix that.

I am on XP SP3 though…and I am on my third try here. Any other ideas? It is pretty much a clean install and this is the second progrma I have installed minus Office.

So confusing…

Is there a way to manually install the langauge pack it speaks of?

After some digging and looking at logs it would appear that the DVD Media has a bad installer on it. The payload that failed to install calls an installer in the extensions directory that is 0KB. I need to call Adobe and see if that is the problem – bad media?
